I called up Talladega Raceway today to get info about renting the track. This is not the super speedway but the road course. Its supposedly a great beginner track with a nice flat layout.

I can rent the track for $1,000 if I have 10 drivers to sign up. This is for 9 Hours of UNLIMITED TRACK TIME!!! Just imagine for $100 bucks a person we can have the entire track open to us for an entire day. The only catch is this offer is only good Mon-Thurs but for 9hrs of track time I'm willing to miss a day of school. He said he has plenty of days open in the next few weeks so I want to get a date set and get this thing rented out. It would be the experience of a life time for the team and an overall blast. Let's get a list of people who want to do it (better be freaking everybody) the we'll worry about getting a date set.

Update. If we can 15 people to run the price will only be $65 a pop. Remember to that this is not wheel to wheel racing. It will just be lapping so you don't have to worry about nailing anybody.

What times are we looking at here 9-5 or what??? Being during the week provides some problems with tests and labs :( But I love the idea

Does the price include track workers, or do we have to work the track??

We might want to consider talking to the AERC guys to see if they want to join in on the fun to lower the price.

The track is alot of fun...just ask Cameron or anyone else that has been out there. Also, the track is really safe. There is only one corner that if you spun out you could wreck your car, all the others have plenty of room.

That includes everything and you don't have to work the track. I also talked about Ambulance rental but one is not required for lapping. Update on the list.

I'll try to plan it far enough ahead so that we can all sort out our schedules.

I am in and i am almost certain that Kyle would be too. I also know some cats from Atlanta that would be down. There would have to be like a 2 week advanced notice though so they can get off work

I've put my car on that track once and I had a blast! Just remember that after you come back you'll probably need new brake pads, your tires will be beaten to hell and back and your brakes will be glazed which means that your car will hardly stop until the brakes cool down. Be ready to shell out some money afterwards.

Oh, and is their going to be an instructor or are ya'll going to go out there and not know what in the hell you guys are doing. Just a thought.

One of the Type-R owners that is for sure coming (Ken) has decent track experience and has ran at Talladega events before. I'm also trying to get a few other fellow R owners with track experience to come.

As for the post cost issue.

1. Get a set of extra rims to mount a set of tires on. Doesn't matter what kind just something for the track. Find a car from the junkyard with your lug pattern and you've got yourself a cheap set of rims.

2. Brake rotors from autozone only cost me $50 for a pair of 11.1 inch fronts. This is what alot of track guys use because they are cheap and they work.

3. Brake pads. A good street set can be had for $50. Race compounds around $100-$180. If you don't want to overheat your braking system don't run a bunch of back to back laps. Also since this will be for fun you don't have to max your car out on the main strait everytime. By cutting down speed on the faster straits you will lessen braking force and heat needed for the ajoining corner.

4. Fluid. Its cheap as hell so that isn't a big deal.

I suggest saving up now and start stocking the parts you think you might need.

WiggiE

I would definitely suggest coming with the track with two sets of front brake pads. One to run with and one for the drive home. If nothing else just get a set of Autozone pads. Yes, they suck but they will be well worth their money after you glaze the hell out of your other pads.

For those who really like to get deep into the braking area, I would suggest buying a set racing brake pads for the front. If you need suggestions on what are good racing brake pads let me know. I would not drive to the track with the racing brake pads on due to the initial heating needed to get them to grab.

As far as tires, you really don't need anything better than what you have on your car if you are just going for fun. If you are going to get a good time then tires is the best mod you can do to run a better time.

Everyone should flush their brake fluid before going. If you don't want to spend much money on brake fluid just go to AutoZone and get Valvoline Synpower DOT 3 & 4 brake fluid.

Brock: Are they going to be supplying helmets for rent or do we need to get some???

ActiveAero
08-27-2002, 08:48 PM
I thought about helmets today but it was too late to call. I'll check on it tommorrow but I'm sure they have rentals. If not all we really need is 4-5 helmets because I doubt there will be more than 2-3 people lapping at a time so we could share if nessecary.

I would rather my car perform to its full potential than half ass. As for your rim idea, the car is going to perform better with stock rims unless suspension modifications have been done to the car. The instructor I had uses his 15's (Type R) for the track and has a set of 16's for the street. Things like this do add up in cost. None of us really need these extras, I was just telling everyone what their car would be like after a day at the track.

BTW, you were saying not to run back to back laps and not to go fast down the straits so that it would be easier on your brakes. Who in the hell wants to go out to the track and drive six-tenths of what your car is fully capable of. The whole point is to drive ten-tenths (being careful of course) or somewhat close to that. It's fun to go and rag your car out for a day. That's what they were made for. :)

1. I'm talking about stocked sized rims. I doubt you are going to pick up any 22's in the junk yard. Besides you should already know how I feel about oversized rims.

2. If you are cheap and don't upgrade your brakes you will HAVE to not run back to back unless you like brake fading off the course. I for one will be trying to kill my car.

3. Why run at 6/10's you ask? Because none of us know how to drive at 10/10ths yet and getting out on a road course for the first time trying to go all out isn't the smartest thing ever. Learning how to analyze the track in terms of corners, straits, and compromises doesn't mean you have to be driving all out. Slowly and smoothly working your way up is how its done.

4. 10/10ths isn't safe. That's 1 tenth away from loosing it.

5. If you are serious about actually doing this alot then these "extras" will be valuable. For all you guys that like to drive around and be pretty then of course this will be a waste of time and cash.

Just giving you guys an update. I'm currently trying to work it out to have a least one instructor on hand to ride with us and give us pointers. My friends Brett and Lee are now officially going. So make that a total of 10. Lee is looking into getting his friend Kin to come to the track. Kin owns a Ferrari 360 Modena Challenge car, a 360 Modena Hardtop, 360 Modena Convertible, AMG Mercedes, supercharged NSX, and his Porsche 911 GT2 is on its way. He his an experienced racer so hopefully he can come in one of his cars (most likely the 360 challenge car) to help us out. If not I hopefully can get up with someone I know.

The track is like 2hrs away (i think). Scott, the owner of Zen Motorsports said that he too would definitely go. All we have to do is let him know of a date. He has a pretty bad ass 5th gen Prelude and also has mad track time at Seabring, Fl. Also, he said if we wanted to, inorder to get more people, we could but a flyer of some sort up at his shop. Just an idea. If we were willing to make the drive, he could possibly get us track time at Seabring maybe under the usual going rate there.

i was up that way last week and leaving from montgomery and going straight up 231/21 it took about an hour and a half. i did have to stop twice though due to construction and one lane. this would be a great trip and you can count me in as long as the new car goes through and as long as i know in advance to get off from work.

I takes 1 1/2 hours to get to the track. Get off at the Sylacauga exit off of 280 and make a right and keep going that way for about thirty minutes.

Damn, I need money............yes, it is an issue of money, not driving around looking pretty, trust me. I can't call up mom and have her send me cash, so I have to use what I earned over the summer and most of that went into the coilovers. Most of my cash would be wasted in the fee to get in, then I would kill my tires that only have 10k on them, wear out my brake pads and probably rotors too..........the fun vs. cost just isn't there. I am stuck to draging and saving for a stg.3 for now, maybe if I can intern this summer I can get about $3k or so for play money

Oh, I am not saying you guys should go by this slogan, but I would eventually work my way up to it "If your not scared, your not going fast enough"- Then again, that was by a race car driver.......so he was definitely familiar with the limits. Anyways, have fun guys, let me know how it is........I can dream what my car can do in the tWizTez

No its not. Its all the same. Driving is driving. The only difference is on GT3 my car is turbo charges and has close to 500hp. I also get to go like 170 mph on it. Other than that, its all the same

I'd love to go, but it's going to be a tough sell. My car's light, so it handles OK, but it's not exactly set up for this sort of thing. We might bring the FSAE cars out, depending on cost and date.
