Light session, about 20 or so real passes.
The tone was set early, hot off the street, pump gas 415whp.
after some fine tuning and turning the boost down a little, it settled out at a very acceptable (and conservative) 406@18psi. no hint of knock, plugs were perfect and even.
in went the race gas, spent about two passes hacking out the map, left it at mid/low 11's AFR wise, and setup the nitrous maps.
made one pass on the nitrous (that wasn't a pure tuning pass), 500whp (on the dot). 600psi bottle pressure, so the fuel side was left in the low 10's in anticipation of the 900 or so psi tomorrow.
Final numbers:
18 psi pump gas 406whp
26 psi race gas 465whp
24 psi race + nitrous 500whp

Well the track didn't like the Volvo today. First pass on the burnout, it immediately lost all compression. Definitely sucks because I was wanting to call out the nitrous LS1 guys.

Hoping its the HG. According to Kenny the Pistons appeared fine from what he could see. He has a cometic at home for it.

I hope it's a HG, but I can't imagine it just randomly going in such a fashion. It would still crank don't you think?
Very nice pump gas numbers.
I'd imagine if it was a track only car that it should be tuned on a track-like run or shit like that does happen.

So it appears that all 4 pistons went the way of Dixon's first LS1 at the same moment. Conspiracy theories amount to the bottle pressure being significantly above 900 psi when he hit the button thanks to a bung pressure gauge. Rebuilt it stronger heeb!

stuck nitrous gauge and severe detonation. they weren't over-powered. given the circumstances, I doubt a set of forged pistons would have been too happy either.

+1. Your pistons are fine Michael. Stop worrying about them. Forged wouldn't have survived what happened to Kenny's car either.

Forged pistons up next? New n/a pistons?

noo NA pistons have really weak ring lands. Those were turbo pistons that we then cut reliefs in. I'm going to investigate some forged pistons, while tossing around the idea of going ahead and building the stroker bottom end.

About 4-6 months, if stored in a sealed container in climate control. If it is somewhere prone to temperature changes (read: condensation inside the container), then it is significantly less...
You should look into some JE's. A set of one-off, custom built pistons is really not *that* expensive. IIRC, they are like $560 for a set of four if you do not rush them...

What does a stroker require?
linuxman51
12-22-2008, 10:46 PM
fuck nitrous.
gotta have it.
1) the addiction. once you mainline, you never go back
2) with the converter thats in the car, it wouldn't get out of its way for 8 of the 12 seconds down the track.

ouch.
It would require a little more work than fitting a set of oversized forged pistons, but I've got that setup shoeboxed for down the road. Coming up with the crankshaft wasn't particularly easy.

If you decide to buy pistons now could you use them later when you decide to go stoker,or does it require different pistons??

Not really, some motors you change the rods and crank to get a stroker.

Depends on how you set it up. In my case, no I could not use the new pistons with the stroker stuff, as volvo changed the pin location in the piston and I went with a custom set of really long rods (and pistons to match. It should be stated that yes, in fact I do have everything I need to assemble the stroker motor, but No, in fact I will not be doing that yet)

If I wanted to spend money on another set of rods, I could use the same pistons both times. Since I've already got two sets of rods, this really isn't something I'm interested in doing. Wonder what I could sell my hbeams for and get longer rods/shorter pistons for the 83mm crank....

too low a stall speed to do a burnout, it was to help get things spinning. unfortunately it simultaneously tightened and loosened my piston to wall clearances.

measured the bores today, ruf-master-R showed up and showed off his skillz (and pimp ass measuring equipment). Things looked decent enough (its gonna hafta get bored to get back to round, however it won't have to go all the way to first oversize assuming the machine shop can hit it and the pistons can be made in the right size).

meh, things like this:
Since there are so many doing the 16valve swap i thought this would be a nice gesture to post here.. For those who dosent understand swedish, this is a B230FT with H-rods and std pistons, standard 531head and valve sizes.. His running E-85 and 1680cc injectors..
no link, gotta reg anyway.
2bar of boost and hi got 563hp and 645Nm and have made a 10,89sec run with top speed of 205km/h
If u scroll down wrd in the thread you get a look at the beautiful red volvo 240 that this insane ketchup b230 is mounted in
seem to highlight the underachievement of the US volvo scene (and I include myself in that).

more carnage as things come appart...
took the accessories and crank pulley off two days ago and discovered that the crank gear locating pin had sheared off. it might not be a big big deal as typically once the pulley is torqued down the pin itself shouldn't be seeing any load, but it is troublesome. might see if I can get a keyway cut into the gear and just use a woodruff key.
I bought an upgraded gear back in march from one of the alleged swedish guru's, however when the gears finally showed up in sept, they were apparently incorrectly finished and the keyways were not uniformly cut, so they get to go back. :(
