The a/c in our house has bit the dust finally. Does anyone know of a good a/c that maybe can just come out adn check it without charging a stupid amount of $$$?

Can't really make it to auburn because i gotta work.Make sure everything has power and make sure the coils are clean.Sometimes if the coils get to dusty it will kick it into overload and it wont come on.Also check power on the contactors. If they have power than push the center in to see if they still work.Might just be a bad contactor

Also check to see if the A/C unit has frozen over... if it has shut off the A/C, wait for it to melt, then replace the filter and clean the coils.

Unit is not frozen, the unit did freeze over last week and I let it thaw out and when my roommate came back this week it just magically broke for some reason. Here are the facts, it does come on, it does blow air, it does NOT blow COLD air. The breakers have been flipped on and off and the outside unit does turn on. Thanks again guys.

there should be a pvc pipe coming off the unit inside, its to drain all the water away, some have a float/switch that could be tripping it to not cut on, make sure that pipe isn't clogged up. or it could need a recharge.

Is it a heat pump?, if so it could be a problem with the reversing valve. If it is just a good old A/C, then it is more then likely low/or no R22/R or R-410a depending on how new the system is, or there is a something going on with the compressor(controller, wiring or the unit itself).

I have a free-standing portable unit that could cool a room (not the house) but I won't let it go cheap.

LOL. Not what I meant. I have an A/C unit that is similar in idea to a window unit except it is free standing and portable, you run the exhaust hose to the window. Cost me in the neighborhood of $400 when I bought it about a year or two ago and used it for 1 summer when I was out west to keep my office cool (computers); I haven't used it since I've been here since I have central heating/cooling. It is like a 500BTU unit IIRC; enough to keep a room nice and cool but not a house.
I was just kidding, but I could hook you up with a bairly used box fan for $15

LOL, I had a feeling you were but also thought you were implying I meant a box fan as my "free standing, portable unit" which was not the case so I clarified for Will in case he is interested.
