I bought an '86 GTI last Wednesday in Atlanta. It's definitely a different car than the mk4 was. This is probably the most basic car I've ever driven. I'm pretty excited about getting it back to a solid mechanical state of existence. Previous owner had a good bit of maintenance stuff done to the motor over the two years that he had it.
I don't have my camera in Auburn with me, so pics from the previous owner will have to do...replacement wheels are very close to the top of the list for the very near future.

For now the car needs new wheel bearings, and a master cylinder right away.
If I come to the meet Tuesday, I might bring it out.

Wheels will most likely be some stock BBS RA'a or RM's from the 16 valve for now. I haven't researched the coilovers much yet, but I'm thinking Koni should have some good shtuff. And yes, quad rounds are among the items on my short list as well.
Brent, thanks for the offer. I'll actually be ordering a full set of wheel bearings soon. So if you're in the DML yet, I could use some help with pressing the bearings. I'll also be changing the master cylinder soon too, but I'm pretty sure that's an easy one person job.
When I get those two items fixed, I'll let a select few people drive it. You probably have a pretty good idea of who you are.

Yeah, I had to do it though. 5 cars wasn't going to cut it at our little house here in HSV. The driveway is busting at the seams with 3... I'm lucky I have a place to store my VR-4. Phil has told me he's seen it around town though, so it's still kicking around Auburn.

I may boost the 8V later on down the road, but I want to make sure the chassis and the rest of the car is in the kind of shape I want it to be in first.

Yeah, put even MORE weight over the front axle, that'll make it handle better. ;) The Dahlback car is a joke, and was always outperformed by less powerful cars, and as said, was a 5 cyl 20v. Put the 16v head on the 2.0 bottom end for a good fun reliable time. Put in a 1.8t if you want to boil tires as easily as a VRT but for less cost upfront while still retaining the original weight distribution and getting better gas mileage. Or, leave it a ragged out 8v with a sloppy shifter like 85% of all Mk2's, but it'll last forever. :P

Haha! You haven't even seen it and that statement is almost perfectly accurate; however, the old 8V seems pretty solid so far. The PO gave me several receipts for general engine maintenance/repairs from VW City in Atlanta. Something like $1000-1300 worth over the past couple years. A good portion of that was labor though.

BUMP!!!

.
Update on the GTI!!!
Over the past couple weeks I've been installing the following items:
(the first two items complete my shifter bushing rebuild from the fall)
Shift box main bushing
Shift rod plus ball and socket
Ball joints
TT/R32 rear control arm bushings
Front strut mounts/bearings
Bump stops and dust covers
Tie rods and new rubber boots
Poly steering rack bushings
Drive flange oil seals
New axles
Sooo...Last night I finally got all of my shtuff installed and put wheels on. Before any adjustments my wheels looked like this:
\------/
|------|
http://media.firevortex.net/icons/custom/green/fv-green-confused.gif Needless to say, I needed to make some major adjustments before I tried to drive anywhere.
So this morning I did a little research on some DIY alignment techniques. I decided to use the "string box" method to get a rough alignment. Front end alignment spec for toe is 0*+/-10' (zero degrees plus/minus 10 minutes). According to my measurements I got the front left toe to 0*+12' and the front right to 0*+9'. http://media.firevortex.net/icons/custom/green/fv-green-yes.gif
Then I went for a little drive. I fell in love with the car all over again! For real! I took it down a nice curvy road near my house, and I was grinning ear-to-ear the entire time. http://media.firevortex.net/icons/custom/green/fv-green-banana.gif Yes, it's still slow as balls. However, the driving dynamics make up for lack of speed beautifully! The car has great road holding, with amazing steering feedback. It's so easy to make mid-turn changes now...I can feel EVERYTHING! It's so awesome!
This has given me a whole new desire to get the BBS wheels finished so I can shave some rotational weight. I also need to wrap the engine up a little tighter (read: fix an oil consumption problem, and add some bolt-ons).
I foresee this project reaching ridiculous levels of fun in the future! I'm so happy right now. :partydanc

Like this (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4612025). Paint is stripped and the lips are polished. A couple of them are a little bent, but I don't know yet if it's gonna effect the ride. I'm gonna try to get into the DML soon to sand blast, then paint 'em silver. I'd like to retain the polished lip, but I'm sort of on the fence about it.
They are soft wheels, so it should be easy for a shop to roll the bent wheels back to a true round. Speaking of that...has anyone had experience with wheel repair shops in the area? I'd be willing to drive to B'ham or ATL, if I can find a decent priced shop that doesn't hack up my wheels.
I still have my old RT-615's from the mk4 track wheels that I plan to use (205/50 15). They'll be a little bubbly on the 6 inch wide BBS's, but it should give me more than enough traction. :D

BBS content has finally made it to the car!!! I got lazy and just spray painted, rather than powder coat. They look fine from more than 5 feet away, but up close there are a few blemishes that I'm not 100% satisfied with. And Grady's put a pretty nasty gash in one of the lips when they were mounting the tires Friday. I didn't really notice until after I drove away. I was too anxious to get them on the car to wait until today to take them back up there.
Wheels are BBS RA from the early 16V GTI/GLI. 15" x 6" ET 35
Tires are 205/50-15 Azenis RT-615, and they fit PERFECT IMO! The outside of the tire is just barely beyond the lip of the wheels. I can't wait to put these things through their paces at an auto-x.
Without further ado....here's a before:
