Ehh...front looks like a Supra (aka the ugliest part of the Supra), which is a little disappointing, but the rest of it is pretty neat. Lots of great looking details everwhere - it LOOKS expensive.. Specs are INSANE, and there are some really cool parts about the design. Can't wait to see some vids of it. Just wish I didn't think "Supra!" every time I saw the car.

Because us import drivers don't have to shift at 5500rpm. :P By the way, it is smaller than an LS1 and makes more torque plus a hell of a lot more hp.

Ahh the world of Ass Peed. Such a diverse group. I feel that this thread is a pretty good representation of our little bubble.
Anyway, I'm excited about Toyota stepping back into the performance game w/ this car. They've been out of that realm for quite a while, and this car obviously sets a high bar as such a pronounced "halo car". Though I'll never have the opportunity to drive one, I think I have far more to gain as a consumer just from the significance of the release of this vehicle.
I like the car, I like the looks (though it it is quite extreme), and I'm looking forward to seeing it in black.

Daniel there is A LOT of difference between a mass produced LS1 and the hand built I am sure 4.8 in this car. This car makes 356 tq, I wouldn't say that is a lot more torque than a LS1. The Vette LS1s had 345hp 350 tq and the LS2 400/400, only reason I referred to that I know those motors pretty well. What was a stock 2JZ 300hp and what tq? I wonder why 10-12 years ago every "super car" or "high end sports car" had some type of FI and now it seems they are trying to make the power NA. Don't say emissions because plenty of FI setups retain full emissions compliance and that is a KIT manufactured by an aftermarket company with 1/10842674280% the budget of a Lexus, Mazda, or Nissan. Just an observation I have made, to me FI is a win win for power and torque. All diesels have gone that way, hell the 335 with it's twin turbos is faster with a few mods than a M3 which again is a badass motor but imagine a slightly bigger twin turbo motor in the M3 with larger turbos. They would be deep in the 11s I am sure, and probably get better economy (out of boost)

I was just messing with you. I just said it made more torque, not much, just more. Plus it is smaller. If GM built a 4.8L V8 DOHC, it will not have much torque than the Lexus does - definitely not more power. I don't know why they wanted it to be a high reving motor - fuel economy maybe? If you aren't killing it and just shift at 3000rpm, it would have plenty of around town power and most likely decent mpg's.
I think the Supra motors were rated at 320hp and 310tq? Not quite sure.

Granted this might be a cop-out, but I believe there is validity in the argument that if you're bitching about the price, then obviously the car wasn't built for you. If they are only making 500 of these cars, then the price is absolutely justified being that high. I'm sure that they will sell all of them. Toyota couldn't give a shit whether we (the collective low-end consumer) think the price is fair or not, as it is not being marketted to us. I'm pretty sure that the purpose of building this car was not to appease the masses.

At only 500 made, you;re correct in saying that it will sell out. But what effect will it have on Toyota/Lexus and it's image as a whole? It's not a car that people will see every once in a while like a GT-R.

There were only 400 Enzos made. What effect did the production of that vehicle in 2002 have on Ferrari?
There have been only 200 Veyrons made (as of end of year 2008 numbers). What effect did the production of that vehicle have on Bugatti?
Hell, there were only 2 R390 road cars made. What effect did that have on Nissan?
Two points:
#1 Just because there are low production numbers of a certain car does not mean that people won't know of its existance. There are countless photographs of my first and second examples.
#2 A halo car for a manufacturer CAN (plausible) set the tone/direction of the car company. Nissan fanbois world-wide still splooge from wetdreams of the R390. And this was a car which came from a non-exotic car maker, but it is still highly regarded.

Ferrari and Bugatti are not Lexus. They don't sell cars for normal people. I'm talking about their effect on perception of the brand. I don't think Bugatti and Ferrari gained a ton of notoriety that they didn't have already.

Most people don't know about the R390 though. And it was born out of a need to homologate a race car. Not an engineering exercise.
I just don't think I'm seeing Lexus's reason for making a car in this price/performance range. It seems like they'd be better off competing with the R8, F430, Gallardo, etc. crowd or somewhere around there.
But hey, I guess it's still kinda cool.

This point is more about the visibility of the product, than the "effect on perception". Will people know of its existance and be able to recognize it?

Although I'm just totally speculating, I think it is more likely than not that, due to Toyota's already HUGE visibility in the market place, I think that the production of this car WILL be noticed (unlike the R390). However, Bugatti had fallen off of people's radar. Most did not know what in the hell a "Bugatti" was. I feel pretty sure that an overwhelming majority of self-proclaimed car guys cannot name Bugatti's supercar prior to the Veyron.
Most people don't know about the R390 though. And it was born out of a need to homologate a race car. Not an engineering exercise.
True. Valid point, but in today's world of intantaneous information sharing/transmitting, I think that the release of this car has a MUCH greater opportunity for "most people" to see/learn/know of the LFA. When the R390 was born, the car community in the US was not nearly as linked or informed as it is today (read: less internetz).
I just don't think I'm seeing Lexus's reason for making a car in this price/performance range. It seems like they'd be better off competing with the R8, F430, Gallardo, etc. crowd or somewhere around there.
Because they need something to make a statement. When thinking of Toyota or Lexus, most people still do not think "world-class" or view them as a top-tier manufacturer (especially when comparing lexus to MB). They have gained considerable ground in this, as more price-conscious shoppers have begun opting for an LS over an S or 7series, but there is still a gap. Producing a car with such extreme performance and such an extreme price tag (whether a few feel that it is deserving or not) gives off an air of caution-thrown-to-the-wind and no-expense-spared desire to reach the top.
But hey, I guess it's still kinda cool.
I will admit that I am biased towards Toyota, and I'd love to see this thing get some good press, simply because I want to see more of it. I know that it won't really measure up to the hypercars that I dream about at night in terms of raw emotion (read: Pagani). But, I would like to see it get a lot of press. I think that is what a large part of this is about: transforming the image of the company. With the recent introduction of the F-line, I think Toyota is trying integrate performance/fun back into their cars. This car will set the stage for the Toyota HT-86. I just hope that it can meet the lofty bang/buck expectations of quite a few enthusiasts (turbo or not).

Argue Either way...That cars 375k price-tag just screams stupid to me. While they might want to compete with the likes of MB(the only real comparable,as MB makes a SUPER-CAR of sorts with the SLR MClaren)...I still think most MBs are overpriced. This car from Lexus is well beyond that.
I know its not about pleasing the masses, its a brand image. I can understand that. But selling a 150k lexus may have the same effect as selling a 375k one...especially in the world of super cars...id rather have a ZR1.

Lexus is selling every one of these cars at a loss. To me that indicates the purpose of this car is to garner some attention and showcase some technology that will trickle down in the future. Sure this car probably wont run laps around any other hyper cars, but for its price it seems to actually be a pretty good value. $375k is less than the $440k that a Carrera GT which has a 0-60 of 3.9 sec compared to the 3.7 of the LFA. The McLaren SLR has a top speed of 207 compared to 202 of the LFA and is only .1 seconds quicker to 60 yet the SLR is 120k more expensive than the LFA.
I think the LFA has already done what it was intended to do. Get people like us talking about Lexus/Toyota in the same sentence as other hyper cars. And when you look hard at the specs and price, it compares favorably.

Good god it sounds amazing.
A please let's drop the dollar per performance argument for a 500 unit car. Using that logic every Ferrari, Lambo, etc that has ever been made is an idiotic purchase because you've always been able to get faster or nearly as fast cars for much cheaper.
And BTW you guys do know this thing is lapping the Nurburing in the 7:24's don't you? That's faster than the ZR1, GTR, Enzo, Carrera GT, etc so it's definitely a beast of a car.
