dragnGSR - what are you getting to replace the 335?

Day #4 of remodeling the other side of my duplex...tired, sore back, ready to be done. The end is near! I'll do a few Before & After pics in a day or two.

Ordered some more parts today for project "Let the GTI breathe." Hopefully I'll be tearing into it within the next couple weeks.

I also might be getting some good ole' R12 from a friend to recharge the AC system in the Supra :partydanc. That way I'll at least be able to drive something in comfort while the GTI is under the knife. I can't believe I've gone almost the whole summer without AC in either car! It almost makes me want to go ahead and delete the GTI's AC...almost.

Oh yeah, I ordered the remaining valve shims to finish the valve lash adjustment for the Supra. Even through aftermarket suppliers those things are friggin expensive! :emo:

Umm long time no post but back from Fort Knox. About to begin my Goldbar recruiting at MMI.

Ordered new tires for my Z71 today. 37x12.50x20 BFG all-terrains. Also ordered color matched door handles.

The lift will probably be purchased in the next week or so and in September I'll order my wheels.

I'll be going with 20x12 Fuel Hostages on all four corners.

This must have been a bad week for motors. I saw a few blow last weekend.

I was at Road Atlanta last weekend with NASA for the 3rd round of the TeenMazdaChallenge. 2 races per weekend so i'm 6 for 6 for 1st place wins.

Had one one scary moment on sunday. On the last lap going into 10a right at turn in I picked up a rather large chunk of metal in my left rear tire causing it to burst and go instantly flat. I did some super sick nasty Fast and Furious drift action (lol) around 10a until the car slowed so I could limp down the hill and across the finish. Luckily Me and 1 other guy had a huge gap on the rest of the field so I kept second only to find out after the race the first place guy got DQ'd for passing under a yellow giving me 1st. Lousy way to get a 1st but rules are rules.
The metal sliver ended up being a piece of a fellow competitors right rear wheel hub/spindle.

Sorry, I didn't have time to expound earlier. Anyhow, here's the details:

Stealth: When coming home from BRG a week ago, somewhere between ATL and Auburn I think I blew the bottom end out of my car as about 15 mins from my house I was stopping at exit 62 on I-85 to fill up before heading home and I heard something that sounds eerily like rod knock. I am not sure what would have caused it directly as the ride home was fairly uneventful but I can't do anything to prevent it now if it is rod knock. I haven't had the time to pull it apart to investigate what the damage is.

Grand Cherokee: The wife was driving home from a trip we had up north (I flew into Boston, met up with the fam, drove the Jeep to Presque Isle, ME and back to Boston to fly home as I couldn't take the trip with them due to school and work) and was merging between two highways in the NYC area when she said the engine died which she noticed due to a lack of power steering. She said she started it up to get it to the nearest service station and in the process the engine died 6 more times and was running rough when it was running. A compression test revealed low or no compression in all 8 cylinders. The Jeep just crossed north of 140k miles that morning. I think the engine jumped time but none of the mechanics wanted to pull it apart to investigate as if it isn't the problem it is lost labor and time is money. The 4.7L is a non-interference engine so if it is a timing issue, fix the problem (stretched chain, timing chain tensioner broke, etc), reset the timing, and it is good to go. As a result, considering our options and the costs of towing it back for me to repair or waiting for the actual verdict to come in with a bill, we decided to have a rebuilt engine put in (per the mechanic's recommendation) to get her back on the road as quickly as possible (comes with a 3 yr warranty on the plus side). The first place she went (which was a Mobil station on the freeway, first place she could get to) wanted $5100 for this which is ridiculous. She got in touch with some family that live in NYC and went to their mechanic whom they've used for a number of years; he also recommended either Jeep replacement or engine swap, but he's doing the work for $3400 after tax which is comparable to what I estimated it would cost for me to transport the Jeep back here for me to fix, get the family back here, and the cost of repairs if I did the work. I still think it is expensive but we're stuck with her in NYC and my older daughter who should have started school this week. Not to mention, we have been discussing replacing the Jeep (been considering a Sequoia or other large SUV) but it really isn't in the budget so we opted to keep the Jeep (also before this went down); and, we just had Ira put in a new trans (I destroyed to original because of absent mindedness when towing and leaving the Jeep in O/D) adding a new engine basically gives us piece of mind for at least another couple of years. This happened this past weekend, basically a week after the incident with the Stealth. Currently the fam is in NYC staying with friends until we get the Jeep back.

So, that is how we destroyed 2 engines in a week.

Currently just waiting to get my passport back from the Japanese Consulate General with my long term visa stamp.

Nothing too exciting from Lankford land. Band is about to start picking up on our originals and deciding which ones we want to record. Between my and my singer's studios, we're going to attempt to get our album finished or at least recorded with rough mixing by the end of this year.

Long story but the short version is my Mom lives in Presque Isle. I went up there because one of my sisters got married so I went to her wedding. When I lived in Newport, RI I used to go upstate ME all the time (my mom used to live in Madawaska), even got into UoM at Orono and thought about going to school there. I love the area in the summer but the winters are just too long for me; but, I like how things just seem to slow down there, it is very calming.

Made some good progress on the green VR-4 this weekend after being gone the past two. Thanks to Will for lending a hand.

Done this weekend:
Engine mounts and tranny mount are in and torqued.
Rear precat gutted, cleaned up, and reinstalled.
Discovered the last original boot on the front axles (passenger side inner) tore so add that to the list of R&R items.

(Newish) Suspension is ready to go back in the car, just need a bumpstop and shock boot for the front. Going to rip out all the vaccuum lines and redo them and hopefully get some boost running through this thing.

Some parts I ordered for the blue car almost 2 months ago should be here Thursday. :D

Amazing how much better my car feels with a new snub mount... but it still needs new motor mounts and a trans mount. 140k+ miles on it now; its beyond time.

The old snub was turning to dust after 3 years and 70k miles, split at the top and the inside was worn to powder. To bad I cannot change motor mounts in less than 35 minutes from first pump of the jack to wheels back on the ground.

Still playing with clutch options. I can spend upwards of an hour in literal 5mph of complete stop and go traffic. A nice sti 6spd with a stock clutch would be easy to drive and last a while. 5spd clutches with 50+k miles of longetivity and easy to drive with the correct holding limit is a tough combo to come by and usually costs some monies.

Are you going for style, handling, power, space, specific features/trim? Looked at any SUVs from Lexus? What's your budget, 25K-30K-ish?

Style- I would say those 3 cars top my style list.
Handling-I assume it would be the FX, MDX, and 4runner in that order. Not uber important but I'm sure it would be nice to have a good handling suv type car.
Power- not of utmost concern
Space- Probably top 3 of importance on my list
Specific features/trim- leather heated seats. If I went with the FX or MDX, would like to have the navi/bluetooth capabilities.

The only SUV I looked at from Lexus was the GX470 but that's probably a little bigger than what I'm looking for. I'm hoping with 2011 models coming up, the prices should push down for all of the cars I'm looking at and then go from there. In the mean time I will putt around in the Prelude to get to and from work.

Are you going for style, handling, power, space, specific features/trim? Looked at any SUVs from Lexus? What's your budget, 25K-30K-ish?

:emo:

I have some R12 if your other source falls through.

As for the shims, my local dealer would swap shims for no cost. Make friends at the dealership. They come in handy. Also, you might want to check and see if your shims cross with any motorcycles. As I recall, the 3rd gen 3sgte shim under bucket shims were the same as a motorcycle of some sort. Of course, both of these do you no good since you already bought them :)

Back to the grind. I started training for the Special Agent requirements. It's pretty intense. I have to score at least 1 point in every category and have a cumulative of 12 points just to "pass." So far, all I've been doing is running and it has been a little tough getting back into it. Just to get one point in the run, you have to avg slightly better than 7.25mph for the 12:24. From public accountant to FBI special agent, it's quite a career change. My two main reservations are:
#1 It takes my career out of my hands. I am somewhat in control of where I am right now. If I wanted to move and continue working with the same company, I could. If I wanted to walk out the door tomorrow and find work with another company, I could. Committing to somethin like this, however, would carry me wherever I was needed, whenever I was needed, without much of my input at all.

#2 The ceiling salary @ years 12-20 are pretty limited (120k-ish), whereas the business world has a "sky's the limit" fantasy. It's nice to tell myself every day that it will all be worth it when I'm making boatloads of cash (200k+). The counter-point is that w/ the FBI, the 120k-ish is pretty much assured. In the business world, the 200k+ is balancing the sanity with Work vs Family, as the hours and frustrations will multiply every year. Will I ever really reach that fantasy-land box-1-wage amount.

Oh well... still trying to iron things out.

Actually my other source did fall through. His dad didn't want to part with the stuff. I have a manifold gauge for R12, but I couldn't find the fittings. Do you have all of the tools (gauge, fittings, and vacuum pump)? Could you send me your number in a PM. I can drive up to meet you one afternoon when you get off work if that's cool.

I'm definitely going to keep that in mind about the shims. Next time I need some I might need to use your services :D. We kind of have an inside guy (Ricky) at Lynch, but I don't know if he has any pull in the parts department. My shims match a few old Honda motorcycles actually. I failed to contact the local shops though. I'm not sure it would have been any cheaper than the place I bought them from anyway.

Hell yeah man. What qualification route are you going through? I think I may have to wait another year before applying though, as it says you need "3 years of professional experience" before applying. I'm just now completing year 2. I'm not too clear on it though, as I know the masters of acct and the CPA do provide me some benefit in the process, but I think it's only related to the "critical skill" and not general application.

On a side note, as of October 1, I am getting promoted, a raise, and a bonus

So I don't know if I should be optimistic.

I just ran the 1.5 mile yesterday in 11:50. I'm proud of that, being that two weeks ago (starting out), I was dying when I did it in 15:30ish. Granted, this was indoor, with a/c, and on a treadmill, but progress is progress. Those phsycial requirements aren't too much of a joke for a desk jockey like myself. To put this in perspective, in my day, I might be standing a total of 15 minutes. I get practically no exercise at work. Due to long hours and getting married, my dedication to the gym has become practically non-existant. I'm happy w/ the improvement on my running time. I'd like to continue to work it down and now start incorporating the other categories in a superset form, as I doubt I'll get much of a break when I actually test.

My first 1.5mile at Basic was 13:30 on 2hrs of sleep. My second was 12:36. My final was 11:20. And we only ran 6 times in an 8 week period. This was due to freezing rain and sub 32degree temps every morning at 0445.

I run inermitently on the treadmill and it seems to work. My Last PT test I ran an 11:47 with 62pushups in 1 minute and 59 situps in 1 minute. Granted ive got very little meniscus in my right knee and three damaged ligaments in my right ankle...but its the price we pay.

If you are dropping down 11:50 on a treadmill...you can drop better than that on a track if you know your pace.

Avoid an ipod when you run and just keep telling yourself to keep going while you run. I just repeat: "I wont leave anyone behind, I wont leave anyone behind, I wont leave anyone behind."

Thats my mantra when I run my 2mile and 2.5mile. If you want to get ballsy pick up a 30lb ballistic vest and see if you can make it a couple laps;)

You are a bright dude. If you cant get with Justice Dept. Shoot for the Treasury. I have mediocre grades, some law enforcement/military experience and I have a clearance already...besides that...im nothing to write home about.

Umm no. Crossing your arms in front of you is weak shit.

Put your hands behind your head, fingers interlocked, base of the neck past the base of the spine.

I assure you you'll have a tougher time. I've seen it multiple times with cadets who were JROTC as air force then join ROTC as army. They go from 50 air force "situps" to less than 10 real situps.

Also two minutes doesnt make it easier, especially since our max is higher than yours.

Not to mention you do more pushups and situps in the first minute than you do in the second.

Btw, im just poking fun at you.

I'd be interested in how your pt score would look if you did it by the army standards. I wonder how much of a difference there is.

I wish I could run 2 laps less I know that. I run a 13:18 btw. Max is 13:00 flat.

considering hands behind the head is confirmed to cause damage/strain to the neck...I prefer my arms where they are when im pumping them out...but I have them behind my head when I do declines at the gym...

and I can knock down 83 pushups in 2 minutes and i run the two mile in 15:20 as a best. Id gladly take the 2 minutes over 1 minute for anything.

I'm a self-taught armchair computer nerd and I know nothing about all this, just learning as I go, this is all new to me. So basically I have no idea what I'm doing. Just trying to help apply security patches to a friend's storefront (done) and figure out how the eff these hackers keep getting back in (fail).

Somehow they are determining the location of an admin folder, which has been changed 3 times now, and a password, which has been changed 3 times now, adding an extra admin account for themselves, logging in, and getting full cpanel access and modifying paypal modules to steal payments right out from under her. Pretty nasty stuff.

It's the same dude for the past 3 times, he just never tried to steal payments until today. Luckily it was spotted after just 1.

Keylogger.

I'd try to limit access to the box from anything but a known ip address. If it is at a hosting company you should be able to work with them to potentially get some kind of blocking on the hackers access to the box. Is it a windows server or linux? what web server is it running? ssh or telnet access? or just cpanel?

Keylogger.

Currently securing the eff out of it. htaccess'd the admin folder to only allow one subnet. Password protected the directory. Changed all the stuff again. Different pw's for directory, admin cpanel, email addresses. New user/pw for the sql database.

There was a lot of idle out-of-date stuff on the server, like wordpress and a forum. Those areas had been hit as well, and may have actually been the first target. Although we found traces of a common exploit for the store stuff, so no idea where it started exactly. Unfortunately deleted a lot of files before we thought about checking to see where stuff originated.

It's hard to tell if the dude has access to the server itself since some permissions have been changed, or is only able to run scripts from within it to change all this stuff.

I'm not sure about a lot of that stuff, I know it's a linux server, the host basically said "good luck" and sent us on our way but they did remind us about all the idle stuff, so alllllll that has been deleted except for the store junk. I think the last step which is gonna blow, but probably should have been done first, is to compare all the script files with the "stock" ones to see if someone hid some code. Gonna be lots of fun.

Of course if the guy is actually able to get into the server and poke around in there with everything, a lot of these changes might be pointless, but I guess we have to wait and see.

Cliffs: Kid stole my skateboard, I ratted him out.

While walking the dogs I saw a kid (10-12 yrs old) with my skateboard that I kept in the garage. So I told him, "hey thats my board" + a bunch of stuff about where I got it and how its a 'blank' from a skateshop in Canada and so on. The kid that had it pointed to his buddy on a bike and said he gave it to him and that kid found it in the ditch of course. All the while an older guy that was with them on a bike (maybe 15-16 yrs old) started pedaling off and mumbling about not knowing them, lol.

So I get it back and they ask if I can do any tricks. Well, I was pretty pissed that something got stollen out of my garage but I went ahead and gave it a shot. "I guess I can try something." Right before I popped the tail I mumble "Or I can bust my ass."

Well the "Impossible" (name of a trick) went down as intended surprisingly on the first try after maybe 4 months of not being on a board. It would have been so great to bust my ass in front of these kids after busting them with stolen property. They were about as surprised as I was and wanted me to teach them something, pft.

Well I'm tired of typing shit so long story short we told his dad like the lame ass adults we are and he didn't really do anything while we were there, just said he was taking his sons word about where it came from... Lame. But as we were walking off I heard him tell the boy that he was going to ask the other kids parents about it. Hopefully they'll learn a lesson about stealing and stay the F out of my garage. Or we just pissed off some kids with no discipline and started a war.

We'll definitly be more vigilant on keeping the garage closed.

I think you did the right thing, first it starts with a skateboard, then one of your bicycles, then a motorcylce, then a car.

I would have just gotten even...

wait 8-10 years...show up at his freshman year of college in a Porsche and then sleep with his new/old g/f. Pffffting at him when he says WTF MAN? Just ask if it was worth it to take your Skateboard from your garage nearly a decade earlier...;)

PS, I got this IDEA from RICKY:pimp:

couldn't agree more

I would only make one addition to nicks suggestion/my idea, and that is to sleep with his old gf AND new gf... preferably simultaneously in what some would refer to as a "threesome" but separately can suffice if logistics prevent the former.

What storefront? I'm assuming PHP? Version of Apache and PHP?

The majority of storefronts, especially those in written in PHP, are easily susceptible to SQL injection and remote script execution. My money is on remote script execution being how he keeps regaining access to the system, regardless of passwords.

Best bet to keeping secure?

1) Don't use free or hosting provided storefronts (usually the same). They are easily hacked.
2) Permissions are the big thing. The PHP files should only have read and write permissions for you (the user), and read permissions only for the group and everyone. This applies to files.
3) Avoid remote panels like the plague (i.e. cpanel). They are easily hacked as well.

Zen Cart. Yeah it's free and open-source... it's been running well and is secure enough now short of someone with mental problems and a lot of free time trying to break in, but the problems stemmed from old vulnerabilities she didn't fix. Just script kiddies got a hold of it. Don't know PHP or apache versions, Zen Cart is 1.3.8a. Yes I believe it was a SQL injection, don't know for sure whether all the hacker attention started with that, or from the old wordpress that was on there first. But I do know that several php scripts made their way into the images folder and were mining data in there, a common exploit that I think involves injection. All those were removed and the vulnerabilities were patched but dude still got back in. I was hoping for a way to scan the database for nasty stuff since I heard some people having rootkits and stuff put in there as backdoors in case someone were to delete all the php scripts, but I don't know how.

I'm hoping the metric shitloads of stuff we did tonight will help improve things but like I said, if home slice has enough access to the server still to change permissions and stuff I don't know how effective all our changes will be. I think the last line of defense would be the password protected admin directory, but I don't know how that information is stored. Far as I know it's not going to be embedded in the software where the guy can mine for it like he's been doing. Anyway I'm tired and will have to sleep on it to see what happens. Tomorrow I'm going to be auditing a lot of code against the originals just to make sure we both got all the bad files, and none of the good ones were tampered with.

Thanks for the help all, anything else is appreciated but thanks a lot for the input so far.

GeekSpeed ftw. :partydanc

What hosting company? Would love to know if you have a shell account for the server this is hosted on.
