Every day that goes by I find myself closer to getting the 240sx. 6 more days and it will be final. I need advise, lots of advise. I know nothing about this car, shameful....I know. I don't want to make the same mistakes that I made with the neon. This car must not be ruined.
Someone guide me.
Do you know if its SOHC or DOHC motor?
Got any money for mods?
Is it a shure thing?
Hatchback or not?
Year?

jessie, honestly you might want to find out a bit more before you get any car. Not saying you shouldn't get it, cause I love them...but the more you know the better off you will be. This will help you avoid neonization.

It's not a hatch,
It is a 1992
Not Sure about the motor, I wasn't able to look at it sense it is not offically repo'ed yet
and I'm still saving right now for some mods, but I do have alittle put back.
I'm about 93.7% sure I'll get the 240.

I say don't get it if you don't know anything about it. First of all if you wanna go fast, this won't be your ticket. Just to make that thing move, gotta drop a SR20 or a BIG ass turbo to the stock motor just to make it go. My buddy has a 240. It was slow even though he had a lot of mods, but wasn't fast as the SR20 motor he put in. Once that was swap in, it was a night and day difference. But it's your car, get it if you like but don't get it if you wanna be fast and don't know nothing about it.

Looks like they come with a 2.4liter DOHC pushing around 155hp. Here's a link to one guys site. http://www.csua.berkeley.edu/~asad/240sx.html
He is running mid 15's with basic mods on the stock engine. Not too bad if you ask me.

I want it b/c I like it. True, I don't know much about that car, that's why I want to learn. I was afraid that sense it had all the features that I liked and was just what I've always wanted in a car (body) that I wouldn't be able to do anything with it. So I wouldn't be getting the 240 to be fast, I have to learn the car first the speed will come later.
I like this car

With a little effort, a couple of bucks, and the right connections you can throw a turbo onto that old truck motor. :) The bottom end is solid. You can easily run mid-13's. Well, a person with a respectable amount of car knowledge could at least.

Two words: SAVE and LEARN
Good stuff doesn't come cheap, and while you are saving you will have plenty of time to learn.
Just dont' jump into the car and think, I have to have something for it. That is when you will fuck it up.

To show how little I know about the car, I had no idea that the 240 was a popular car to mod. I don't want to sit on my ass learning about the car when I don't have it. If I don't get it a.s.a.p. I probably won't be able to. The 240sx came to me by chance.
I would perfer to learn by driving. Not by looking it up on the net. Learning by experience is so much better than reading about it in a book. Anything that you guys could help me with will be appreciated, but you can't teach me to drive by telling me about it. I must be shown.

I've learned more from reading than I've ever done...
I've never experienced the proportional increasing gravity of the singularity of a black hole but, I know a great deal about it.
You don't have to experience something to know a great deal about it. I've never programmed in a *nix enviroment but, I know *nix security theory. I've never been a water molecule but, I can tell you a decent amount about metorligcal activities...
Experience is one thing but, if you don't "learn" the fundementals no amount of experience will benifit you. Practicing bad habits is simply re-enforcment of bad skills...

I'm going to have to chime in and say that experience is way more valuable when it comes to cars than book knowledge. As of right now I have more book knowledge than hands on experience but let me tell you the few engines I have helped tear down have taught me alot more than anything I've read. To be successful you have to have both I agree. Think of it this way though. Lets say you are looking into an engine swap. You only have two choices. The first guy has actually pulled and swapped 50 engines successfully. The second guy has read how to do it 50 times but has never popped a hood. Maybe I'm weird but I wouldn't let guy number 2 touch my car.

Guy number 2 has to learn also......thats why he never says that he's never done it before......much like medical interns

So basically you want us to spoon feed you huh?? I for one will not. If you have a question to ask I'll be sure to answer it to the best of my knowledge. For future reference, do not come on here asking what do I do with my 240. You know what I'll say? "Run it into a brick wall." Just a piece of advice.

Well let me first all say again only get the car only if you want it and not because everyone else is saying not to or so. To be honest, if you plan on mod'in it and all, try to do some reserch on it because messing with a 240 isn't easy and cheap. But if you want to just to drive, its all good there!!
Also Frosty just b/c your friends didn't have any luck with their doesn't mean everyone has "their" problems. I'll admit my boy with his SR20 240 did have some problems but once it was fixed, it was a beast on the streets. Anyways guys let her get the car if she really wants it. Anyone can drive a car even though they don't know nothing about it, it's just driving. From what I've been reading 'Sweetlikecandy' GO FOR IT!!!! :D

This came from a discussion Greyson and I had previous to posting on the board. So that is why it doesn't make since to you. And no greyson, you don't have the mechanical will power.......you give up to easy when problems arise to even come close to performing an engine swap(when installing the turbotimer, you said the steering coloumn couldn't be gotten off. You gave up, I got it off....like always;)). I would LOVE to watch you bumble around stupidly spouting off how you know what your doing when you don't have a damn clue. However, continue to say you know what your doing...maybe one day people will believe your little act.

All I've heard is everyone telling me not to get the car, calling me stupid, or just being rude to someone else on this thread. I was told to not speak of what I was unsure of and to ask when I did not know. Why tell me to sit back and learn if you are unwilling to teach me?
Thank you Accordinlyslo.... Someone finely took the time to understand my post before trying to make someone else feel like less of a person for wanting something that they have never experienced before.
For those of you who don't want to or are unable to comprehend what I have been saying all along.....
Use the advise that you give. I don't really give a shit about who knows what about what kind of car. Advise is nice, but don't act like you're better than me just because you drive a honda and know how to take out a motor. Wow, you're so much more manly now that you've lived 20 some odd years and have experienced more than I have had the chance to.

Is this coming from him? Because last time I talked to him he wasn't running mid to high twelves. I think he said his best time was a 13.0. He isn't a real drag race type of guy though, doesn't go to the track often. I'm not saying the car isn't capable of mid twelves, but don't say it if it hasn't run it.

Even though I know that you guys would love to see that  I would have to say no. I've opened a savings account for the 240 and everything, so hopfully I can find it in myself to do these mods right.
I drove another 240sx the other day (Monday) and it was alright, but not in as good of condition as the black 240. It does have a new motor in it though. If I can save up enough money to do the swap, I guess it won't have much to compare with though.
My only problem is that I have to wait (some time before xmas) for the black 240. I could get the white 240 in a matter of weeks (this is the worse of the 2) What should I do?

First off you need a plan!!! I cant overstate that enough. If you just want a shell and are going to do a transplant than get the one that doesn't run as well, but if not, you might want to think about the one with the better engine, since you would be keeping it. What are the price differences in of the two cars?

None of us are gonna help with a swap, who are you getting to do it and what engine? No one around here can do an sr swap.
CAN YOU EVEN DRIVE A RWD car? I doubt it. WHy do you need a swap in the first place? Have you even driven a fast car before?
If you can shell out big bucks to get the swap, you will wreck it because you cant drive a powerful rwd car.

You guys are all pretty sad... If you like the 240sx, get it. Worry about the performance later. I've been down the whole "It'll never work, you can't turbo that engine, blah blah blah". Bullshit. Cummunist partyline bullshit.
You can learn a lot from reading, I learned everything I *theoretically* needed to know about my project before I started it, however, books can't replace experience, and I'm proud to be able to say I have both. I've helped Sam with his 240sx (thats been turbo'ed for about 70,000 miles now) that runs 13.6's all night long (in hot weather), He helped me with my Volvo. I can't even count the number of times people told me that what I wanted to do wouldn't work ("You can't turbo charge an engine with that high compression.. you need something like 7.0:1... It'll never work"). Ignorance, thats all it is ignorance. Nissan's are not pieces of shit to work on, I've looked under the hood of many a honda, and I'd rather dive into the engine bay of a 240 than a civic.. (at least the 240 was designed with some sort of sembalance of sportiness). As for reliablility, that same turbo 240sx (I think he's got well over 150k on the clock right now) has the original factory suspension, tranny, rear end, etc (the factory clutch finally let go after about 40k of boosted life).
Thats not to say Sam wants it that way :) I'm sure if he had his druthers, it'd be all nice and lowered and well handled, but hey, it's lasted this long. Routine maintenence and common sense will go a long way towards a long life for your car.
To finish this little musing up (no rants, I'm too sloshed for rants :) ) I myself have been guilty of missing the occasional oil change, etc in the past (distant past.... ), unfortunatly my car hasn't forgotten no matter how much 20w50 I pour down the hole :) (no, it doesn't use oil, its far worse than that.. not a bearing problem either).
Just go with whatever you feel is right, and sort the rest out later.
