This is what I wrote in the "dream car" thread, I'd like to hear more about what you guys think and why/why not you think it is worth it.

My other dream car would be the 2004.5 Volvo S40 in metallic gray, black, or white (none of that metallic green or red for me). You have plenty of optimizations you can do with those bad boys completely stock... can easily get it over 500HP for ~4k. They have 215HP FWD completely stock, go 0-60 in 6.3s... unfortunately the American model is the only one that is automatic :/.

I was of course going to convert it to AWD...

Alex is the one that got me curious, since he brought up that the turbo and exhaust manifold are one unit and that the engine bay is tiny...

how much does that bastard weigh? also, like you said, AWD would be an absolut must with that much power.

The curb weight is 3,126lbs.

yeah.... wow. They're actually going to offer an awd version, there's been a lot of problems with the .5's so far, and you're not getting 500 for $4k unless you're swapping in a small block......

its the same setup as in the 850's and there aren't a pile of 500hp 850's lingering around. Your optomisim however is refreshing

Hehe I agree. I think the fact that you were just gonna convert it to AWD goes without saying, I mean, who wouldn't just do that real quick while you're in there? ;)

yea fo rizzle. its like 10 bolts, a couple clamps and some extra hardware in the back, and a few well placed zippie ties (driveshaft supports, strut mounts, the non load bearing places ;) )

Those new volvos are sweet. I saw a red one today. Kinda stumpy looking front and rear. hehe.

Theres a guy in atl with an s60, pushing 300 wheel, and he has 20 inch wheels and full audio upgrades.

So you guys are saying it's impossible? Damn S40 forums and me not knowing jack about car performance :/

What would be a more realistic number then? 400?

Also, what would be some more upgrades I could do short of just throwing in a new engine and NOS.

Have you driven one yet? I doubt you'd be impressed. Volvo's have gradually gotten less exciting to drive. I haven't driven the new S40 but I hear it's not too much fun. What S40 forums are you looking at? Like they said if you want a volvo either a 740 or an 850 turbo would be a good idea. Volvo's are great for sleepers and daily drivers if you need more room than a 2 door. However they aren't very light and they don't handle like a sports car. I'm not sure how the internals of the new cars are but the older ones won't handle 400 hp. Bending of rods is pretty common unfortunately. What car do you drive now? Why do you like the S40?

I am temporarily driving a Toyota Rav4 (not sure of the year) with massive problems [oil & engine, likes to randomly cut off whether in gear or out of gear if you drop below 2k rpms, Toyota dealership says nothing wrong with it :/]... I usually drive a '97 Toyota Avalon XLS. I like the look of the S40 and plus all the optimizations that can be done to it (from what I heard) makes it intriguing. I'd like to be able to transport things around and I like the safety of Volvos (Rav4 == sardine can waiting to happen). I drove one in Huntsville at the dealership there (It was a T4 though) and it was pretty fun to drive, I liked how it handled and again on the forums I read an anti-sway bar + suspension upgrades help a LOT making it possible for rallying(sp?).

The forum I was reading is http://s40concepts.net/forum/, the owner of the forum drives what seems to be a S40 T4 with gray paint primer and blue paint streaked down the side... Although it looks better now than it did at first.

It sounds like you're talking about the old S40. The new one is a T5, turbo 5 cyclinder. The old car had a 4 cyclinder motor. The old one isn't even a volvo, it's made by mitsubishi and rebadged.

According to the volvo dealership they were both 2004.5 models, they only allowed test driving on a T4 though.
