This stuff is pretty technical. It's petty neat stuff though.

Ya'll want me to summarize that article? This is what I get out of it:

Shits getting too complicated!!!

Too damn complicated is very true...
Their making the engines harder and harder to work on w/ wrenches :D

Essentially there are two big components addressed in the article.

1) Variable Timing
== Inside the each cam gear is another plate (or gear, your choice in syntax) which is actually connected to the cam. This gear can slide forward or backwards inside the gear actually connected to the belt which allowed the timing to be altered on the fly.

2) Variable Intake Manifold
== A butterfly valve inside the intake runner can be opened or closed depending on driving conditions to shorten or lengthen the distance air travels. Essentially giving the car a short ram air intake when driving conditions demand it.

mmm, I dunno if the short ram example is very good there... The idea behind variable length intake runners is one of maximizing horsepower and torque.. lemme see if i can get away without completely ruining this one.. the long runners are used for low end torque, and above a certain rpm, the butterfly valves change and make the runners shorter, for more higher end horsepower.

As for the dynamics behind it, it has something to do with the way the air flows through the manifold and into the combustion chamber, all towards a better volumetric efficency. As a side note, variable intake runners have been around for a while.

As a side note, have any of yall read the article in the new Sport compact car mag about the new GDI system mitsu got working?
Its like diesel applied to gas cars.

Their new GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) isn't really benifical from a performance standpoint, it's the entire project is mainly geared towards lower emmision standards.

Not true at all, its very much up to the programmer/builder wether or not the engine will be a low emissions/high fuel economy car or a wild ride..
At least thats what I infered from the scc article..
The possibilities are there (well, over there in europe, as usual we get the shit end of the stick), look at what apr did with the audis...
