View Full Version : Downloading problem...

Ok I'm having this problem with downloading videos. Basically they'll get to a certain percentage done, then just stop. Whenever I try to download them again, it goes to the same percentage, then stops again. It doesn't terminate the download... but the bar stops moving, etc. Even though it stops though, the transfer rate stays high.

Using a download manager? What browser?

Try pinging a site like www.google.com for 100 pings to make sure your connection is stable.

IE: C:\> ping www.google.com -n 100

This is more likely the culprit than anything

Although Wiggie is onto something. If you have horrible latency and packetloss your connection could be going belly up

Why would this suddenly start to happen though?... and the percentage is consistent? I use IE.

I usually make it to 4% before it freezes.

Just ran a ping test on google 100% loss.

But on a speed test I get:
6.7 megabits per second

Wait, you're at Campus Pointe, right? I am too... hrmm maybe this could have something to do with it. I just don't get why some files work, perfectly, and some dont. And the % is ALWAYS the same. But can be different for different files... just always the same with the same file.

Could be a problem with their shit, also Campus Pointe filters pings so that won't work.

Sounds like either their edge router or their upstream pipe is getting raped.

Nothing yall can do about it except for bitch. Call every day (EVERY DAY) to whomever is responsible for it. At the end of the month ask for a credit for the service since they are not providing the service your paying for

When I first moved into my new place I was pretty much forced to go with a specific ISP. For the first month it was god-awful. 3-10 k/s downstream, fluxing packet loss at all hours of the day.

Continous bitching and escalating tech support requests eventually got me a 30 minutes phone call with the CIO.

From the next day on I've had a full 5 mbit up/down connection and was credited 3 months of service.

Since that day I've never had a problem...

(Also a thank you letter to him also got me a 10% reduction in my monthly rate too)... These bastards are losing money from me left and right because I rape my pipe on a daily basis. Their loss my gain...

Bitch until they cave.

As the former computer tech at Sterling there was one company that setup ALL of the equipment and connections for the apartment complexes in Auburn. Campus Pointe is stupid, they don't go through Charter. They have two dedicated T1 lines both of which go through AT&T to Atlanta. The first line is 100% guarunteed for the office, and the second T1 (depending on bandwidth needs at the office) will take over any additional bandwidth requests. The problem with this is that, in the best case scenario, you have one T1 line that hundreds of people are sharing... not going to be that great. And that's in the BEST of times. Don't deal with the people at the office, they can't do jack shit about it. As a tech the first thing I did was try and get more bandwidth for the residents (with no luck I might add). The problem is that the Network Trolls at Corporate are aware of the problem, and just can't get the funds to increase bandwidth. Making internet access slightly faster for the residents isn't really top priority.

Now here's the secret I'm going to let you in on (and I tried to do this but the fuckwit residents at Sterling couldn't grasp the idea). Create a petition that says what residents want improved the most. Make sure internet access is placed at the top of the list and try and get as many residents to sign it. Also call the MAIN office and bitch to management there about it (not the people at the club house, not the Network Trolls, but the main office management), and continuously fax the petition to the main office (every single day, and do it at the club house so you don't have to pay for jack shit). That will get the fastest response.

Hope this helps from my experience as Sterlings tech. Also, if you can break into peoples apartments and make sure fucking kazaa and shit isn't running will GREATLY increase speed. At Sterling alone watching the percentage of packets bound to certain destinations, kazaa was ~95% of all traffic. People are fucking stupid.

That is some gay shit. A T1 for all those people. Fuck a T1 cost like $500 bucks a month at the most.

I should not be suprised, raping students for fun and profit is second only to football around here. What do you pay for rent there?

Dude! I live at The Exchange. The NUMBER ONE REASON I moved into here was because of the internet. Ben/Obike knows that that is the damn truth! I lived in the shitty ghetto a.k.a. The Caroline Draughdon Village for the second year I was here in AU simply because the internet was so fucking bad ass. That's all I do when I am in my room is sit on the internet. I watch TV about once every 2 weeks and then I play my guitar sometimes. Other than that I am on the internet. Well, when I lived at the village I had usually 3 PC's in my room. 2 of which were web servers. I hosted 4 websites off of them with unlimited bandwidth, as well as running 4 counter strike servers...32 players servers might I add. Well about a 3rd of the way through my second year of enjoying the kick ass internet connection there and living in the ghetto, the bastards capped the fuck outta the bandwidth. I used to have Upload speeds of 7,000kbps and downloads of like 5,500kbps. Well the uploads went to about 1500 and down was at around 900 at times. They also did something with the ports or some shit because even though my websites still ran well as far as uploads go (I kept those going) the counterstike servers were horrid! People who normally pinged 20 now had latencies of over 200+. It was horrible. I was running a clan then with about 45 people in it and I didn't know what the hell to do. I started paying for servers and I had just one 16 player server after finding out how much the fucking cost! $250+ per damn month for 1 32 player server...1!!!!! Little did I know I was running $1000 per month in CS servers. The bandwidth that I was sucking up was insane from all the videos on my sites as well..I could only imagine how much that would have costed.

Well the time of the year came around to begin looking for new places to live. After a few mild searches I came across the exchange. The first questions I asked anyone in the office was all about the internet. Well the dumbfucks there don't even know what an upload speed is yet they still sell "high speed internet" as they so advertised it. Well I asked how fast file transfers were going over AIM and shit like that and they said that it was good! I said great! Now there is such a thing called "sales puffery" I dont give a fuck! I bet these fuckers knew! I told them that I host websites and run CS servers and they said that that should be fine. I should have talked to someone else but I was all like, "FUCK YEAH! I'm gettin outta the damn ghetto and I have some highspeed net! I get my free CS servers and websites back not to mention how fucking nice this place is!!"

Well over the summer..AFTER I signed the damn lease contract, I find out that this shit is firewalled and I can't host websites outta here. Even if I could it would suck ass majorly because when I upload to my site, sometimes it transfers at .02kbps!!!!! I kid you not! The connection here is SO FUCKING UNSTABLE! I hate this shit! I would NEVER have moved here if I knew the internet was going to suck this fucking bad! Like I said, the number one reason I moved here was because of the internet. If they say "high speed internet" then it needs to be fucking high speed. I bitch and bitch and they haven't done shit yet. I want something fucking done. I can't watch streaming videos or porn for shit. My dick just gones up and down like its a roller coaster at the God damn state fair. One second there will be some good ass action going on, the next thing I know it freezes and starts buffering while showing some dudes fucking hair ass asshole. I DON'T WANNA SEE THAT SHIT!!! Fucking A, I guess it's just time to harrass the fuck outta them even more..every damn day. Oh yeah and yesterday I actually mentioned getting some of my money back because they have not fulfilled their obligation of the said: "High speed internet!!!"

I'm with Trent (except for the Gay sex part).

High speed internet at the exchange? :bullshit:

After four trips to the office they couldn't tell me who our FRICKIN ISP IS. And that was the "technician!" This place sucks, I can't even play XBox live. It will be "full green" one game, then I get into 1st place and all o fa sudden my connection goes to one frickin red bar and I lose. Screw everyone and their illegal music downloads and their sheer stupidity. I'm sick of this frickin internet, all I want is my own cable 3meg service. That's all I ask.

Trent, let's get together and burn this mother down.

Man, I'm with you on that shit. I was asking them if I could get DSl or Cable yesterday. Also Ben...I checked and the fat fucking yetti in the office said that we do indeed have charter cable, its not the satellite coax thingger majigger. I wan't some of my damn money back for rent or at least a free parking spot for every month under the shed. I can't get in shit for good servers in CS! I game alot!!! I want some fucking reparations! Adam wanna go bitch together? Me, you and alot of others seriously need to get together and just have a never ending bitching session until these fuckers get their shit straight! Me and my friend/ roomate Alex have already gone several times...not shit happens. For over a month and a half I couldn't upload shit to my site. It's like the port was blocked but the tech's say that it wasn't. They also said that outlook express wasn't working. I told them I didn't give a shit I don't use outlook express. I go back to the office a week later and my shit still won't upload. Not to auburn OR my webhost that I PAY FOR MONTHLY! Well the fuckers had the nerve to tell me that they just didn't know but they "got the outlook express working!!!" WTF!?!?! I told them that I didn't give a shit and that that was not my fucking problem! I don't care because I don't use it (all of this was done in a nice tone but while holding a gun) I am ready to burn this mother down too!!!

adam p

Okay, look. I just want them to frickin give me reparations for sucky internet and let me CALL FRICKIN CHARTER AND PAY FOR MY OWN FRICKIN INTERNET. Their stuff is total crap. I don't want to be behind their stupid router that I can't control. It's a frickin miracle BItTorrent works, even if its only about 60kb/s max. At least I CAN download something over night. I CANNOT play games online. I just can't do it. I had to stop playing CS:S, HL2, and other games I paid for because I can't play them online. That is rediculous.

Let's go down there together and complain and ask for something. I want a covered spot, for free. Nobody else is using it, give me that. OR, deduct my bill and let me buy my own frickin ISP contract. I'd almost pay on top of my rent right now for some Charter 3meg if I could. But the principle of that is not going to let me. I need something, this sucks. I CANT GAME!!!!

Just a confirmation that the people in the office are fucking morons. I also find it funny that from a shell account in the UK, it is only one hop more than from a condo 2000 yards away.

What is the reasoning you cannot put your own cable modem or DSL in?

Raise holy hell with the managment company. Not the people on site, the actual managment company. Faxes, e-mail, snail mail. Its not war, but its close. It is like the pool being broken for 6 months, or the landscaping looking like shit, it is the same thing as that stuff. If they are going to offer it, they have to fix it or not offer it and allow alternatives

If they do not want you running servers there, then ok, whoopdy do, but downloading shit off the net is a pretty fucking basic service. They said free high speed internet not free web browsing, I would make that point very clear to them.

Keep bugging people until they get it working right.

The technicians are almost always stupid, I'm sure you guys would have learned this by now. Hell, when I was working at Sterling they offered me a summer internship at their main office because i knew as much if not more than some of the network trolls. I turned it down of course when I quit and sued the motherfuckers for gipping me on OT pay.

By the way, they can advertise it as high speed internet because it is technically a high speed connection. It just isn't when you got fuckin 700 people using it.
