After driving home yesterday, I pulled into the space in front of my house and what I had been worried about since the middle of last summer had come true.
Once again there was a puddle of gear oil underneath my car. When I was driving back home my speedometer wasn't working, I thought it might have been a blown fuse or something simple like that. But in the back of my mind I was thinking that it probably had something to do with the speed sensor in the transmission. As soon as someone asked me if my air conditioner was running, because of the fluid coming from under the car, I was like "oh fuck" and knew exactly where it was coming from.
I don't know for sure but my theory is that the weld on the bell housing was strong, but the constant change in the temperature of the bell housing from hot to cold weakened that weld over time. I won't really know until we get the transmission off the car.
I'm planning on dropping the transmission as soon as I have time, which sadly won't be until sometime next week. I might get some of the small stuff done this week and probably start on Sunday. So if anyone wants to help out or learn how to take out a transmission and throw a bell housing into a brick wall  , you are welcome to stop by. And yes, I'm sure there will be beer over here. :D
Id be glad to pitch in and help and let you borrow whatever tools I got (and duct tape). Just lemme know when. That sucks :(
Edit: Did i mention im from South Carolina? For the first 10 years of my life, I thought cars were SUPPOSED to be on blocks

I'd be more than willing to help in anyway you need. I've only done 2 trans. before, so you probably don't want me to fuck with yours.
If need be, I can run to the store for beer, fill up cups, or just run to get the tools from the curb. Let me know IF I can be of any assistance.

I'm sure that you are well aware that trans. are a 2 man job (at least). I didn't mean that I did them all by myself, that is if common sense didn't tell you that already. Anyways, I was just offering my help, which is more than I can say for you at this point.

5 Speeds or Automatics?
Manual trans on both. I'm afraid to do an auto, I have bad luck with wires..... I didn't help much with lifting the trans up or getting it out, just holding the motor up during placement and menuvering the jacks etc.... I was pretty much just instructed on what to do and did what I was told.
"Pull back and hold it there," he said with a cig. in his mouth. Jessie replied extremely excited, "uhh, uhh, yes-um masa!"
Wiggie, that's great!

OK... Thats disturbing... You might have just made me impotent...
BTW... Considering your experience with car suspensions I would trust you with the tranny to a golf cart....

Haha, that was some funny shit. This time I think we'll try to keep track of all the extra peices so we don't find a bolt that goes on the inside of the bell housing, after we have already put the tranny back on the block  .
I appreciate all the offers to help. As of right now the plan is to drop it out on sunday. I'm gonna try to get the small stuff out of the way during the week. And anyone who is interested is welcome to stop by.
P.S. 1.8t: DAAAWG!!! I'll give you a call on the celly Sunday.

Well I've dropped and reinstalled a TH-350 and a 700R4 into a Stingray Vette, but I've never done FWD tranny. Just give me a call cause I'd love to help.
Lots easier, no drive shaft to bother with and that right there eliminates a lot of stupid stuff that has to be done when dropping a rwd car tranny
i may or may not be available Sunday. Either way, where you going to be doin this work at? Your apt? I've got a good jack and stands if you need, and a decent set of tools (minus most of the 10 and 12mm that i lost...always the first to go)

Why the hell does everyone lose the 10 and 12 :D...
I think we've gone through 3 sets of them :D

We'll be doing the work outside of our apartment, and breaking down the tranny on the kitchen table inside. I'm worried about all the attention that these CPO or whatever people around here, because a friend of mine said he got hassled about changing a fuse in his car, but hopefully that won't be a problem.
I've got a bunch of tools but if anybody wants to bring some... you can never have enough tools :) .

Ha! You've got no driveshaft but TWO axle shafts.
I can pull my tranny is less than 15 minutes, without even trying to go fast. I'm sure I could have it out in less than 10. RWD cars are almost always a great deal easier, especially older RWD cars like Brock is talking about.

Yeah, that's one of the sucky things about pulling the tranny on an AWD car. You have to deal with the axles and the driveshaft. :?
We managed to pull mine and change out the clutch in 5 hours, which is about 4 hours less than the book time on the job. But it was still a PITA.

I've got just about all the tools you'll need (well really, you only need a metric socket set and some big flat-head screw drivers) The only wierd tool is the one for the axle-wheel bolt, and if you take the tie-rod ends off, the axles come out anyway.
drop me an im or somethin if ya need extra help... i just got done putting a dsm together, so most of its still fresh in my mind... :)

Jimmy I'm going to pick up 3 more DSMs this weekend from a guy in Alabama, I will check and see if by chance he has any FWD tranny's laying around for you (that are bad with good bell housings).

Just letting everybody know, I'm getting an early start on the car. I haven't been up this early on a sunday in a long time. Anybody who wants to come by is welcome, I'll be outside infront of the apt. If you need directions PM me, I should be checking the board throughout the day.

How'd the pull go? Good thing its not 40* down there like it is up here in Huntsville! I'm out in the garage doing alot of electrical shit I shoudl've done to mine months ago. I outta come up here more often, I'm pretty productive when i get bored up here.
Did you find where it was leaking?
Jimmy, sorry about not showing up............I forgot  :johnny:
Since it doesn't look like Jimmy is going to do a follow up here's how it went.
Pull went fine, easy, and smooth. So here's the fun and condensed step by step...
Pulled the dust cover off the back of flywheel and saw little metal shavings in the gear oil  .. Never good. Also found a nice little chunk of metal that looked like the part from the original patch we put in 6 months ago.
Drained out what was left of the tranny fluid and it took me actually making an electro-magnet for me to convince Jimmy that I could make a magnet out of wires and a nail, to swirl through the tranny fliud just to see how much metal was in the fliud.
Worked for a few hours (working very slowly with many smoke breaks and many beers) and finally got to the point to drop the engine. After some heavy lifting and just basically pulling and yanking the fucking thing around we finally got the tranny off the engine onto my chest and a little metal thing feel out and hit me on my head. I didn't take much notice to it as I was pretty much concerned with getting a 50 pound chunk of metal off my chest.
So we get the thing out and lay it on it's side. Ohh... The original hole is still welded nice and shut :D (Good news)... There is a new hole big enough for me to fit two full fingers into it. Massive almost inch square peircing into the side of the bell housing. After a resounding "Holy shit.." Jess notices the little peice of metal that hit me under the car and point its out to me. I instantly recognize it... Spider gear....
Luckily we have enough of the old diff and spider gears we could possibliy rig up a new diff without buying any new parts (Depending on what spider gears broke). The bell housing is a different story. This hole is way to big to patch...
If someone wants to get me 4 AA batteries I'll take some photos :D...

We just broke down the tranny...
It took me and adam about 20 minutes, a lot quicker than the 5 hours it took me last time (mostly because of the lack of tools I had). The final outcome was:
-Plastic gear for the speed sensor, destroyed.
-The teeth on the bottom of the diff. for the speed sensor, mangled.
-One of the spider gears has a missing tooth.
-And, about a 1 1/2 sq. inch hole in the bell hosing.
The good news is that since Tallahasse Mitsubishi sent me an entire differential instead of only a spider gear kit, when I ordered from them the last time this happened, I can use most of the old parts to repair the diff. So the only thing I will need to get my car on the road again is a new bell housing and speed sensor.
I don't really know how this happened, I wish Quaife LSD's weren't so damn expensive so I could just get one of those. The BM tranny LSD insert held up really good and there was no damage to that whatsoever. It's gonna be fun trying to compress that thing again.

Ha that's pretty funny. I used to make electro magnets like that when I was little using a nail/screwdriver, wire, and a battery. I eventually found an old switch and wired it up so I could turn it on/off at will. I remember thinking I was so smart for rigging that up

Update:
Ordered the bell housing and a new speed sensor from Tallahasse Mitsubishi, and they said it should be here on friday... well they better be here on friday cause I paid for next-day-air shipping. They have to ship it from the factory to the dealership and then to me. Given the intelligence of most people that work at car dealerships, I'm a bit worried if they can get it too me on time but oh well.
We'll probably put the tranny back together this weekend and get it back in the car on sunday. So if all goes well, it'll be back on the road sunday night :metalhea: .
sweet, good to hear you got it situated. how about not putting a hole in the next one. hehe
did you figure out exactly what went wrong?
We really have no clue what-so ever...
The spider gear broke, that about all... We really can't picture what actual event occured that caused this we really can't figure out. Although that one loose tooth really did shred the hell outta the diff...

ahhh... broken spider gears... I know *all* about that (right greyson? :) )
Thats the problem with you fwd guys... if something in the transaxle goes, generally the whole transaxle gets fucked up... yet another reason to go with a rwd ;)
(as a side note, I personally have led to a hole being put in the side of a transaxle, so I know all about it ;) )

What's the word on the tranny??
The final shipment of parts is coming in on wednesday morning (speed sensor gear and the bearings for the diff.)
All of the parts from the old bell housing have been transfered onto the new one... Damn that shit was way harder than I thought it would be.
I'm waiting for the parts to come in and after that, the tranny will be back together wednesday afternoon, and we'll put it in on thursday sometime. (because of a damn statistics exam :( )
More updates: Jimmy, Brandon, and I got the tranny back onto the bell housing and bolted up, it only took 3 TIMES!!!!! First time, we lost a 5th gear stabilizer piece for the syncronizers.......second time, we left out a gear lube channeler for 5th gear, and the third time it appears that we got it right. So, after the second time of reassembly, we decided to time ourselves to see exactly how good we had gotten at pulling the tranny apart. Exact time for tranny disassembly is 9 minutes and 34 seconds with all 3 of us going at it. Exact time for reassembly is 15 minutes and 3 seconds with Jimmy and I going at it, Brandon decided to watch the Mischief 2000 CD(or whatever it was called). So, I say we can pull the transmission apart pretty well now. Tomorrow it is time for reinsertion(<-lol, Clint comes to mind when I hear this word, maybe he is gay......j/k) of the tranny and new bell housing back into its place of origin. Updates shall follow
Update for 11:26pm... Jimmy.... Passed out like a little bitch :D...
Who's up for bench pressin a tranny!!... I am.. :D

Well the tranny is back on!!!... Finally
When we started the car the belts were squealing like crazy but after we drove it around for a little while, it went away. Probably because they hadn't been used in so long.
The car drives fine, and we haven't noticed any problems as far as the cars performance, but there are some weird noises coming from under the hood that seem suspicious.
I put shitty gear oil from wal-mart in it for now, I just needed to get something so I could test drive the car. I will be going to the chevy dealership and getting GM Syncromesh as soon as possible. There is a slight winding noise that seems to be coming from the transmission area, and it kinda goes in and out, I'm hoping it's the shitty gear oil I put in or it's just the gears getting seated in the new bell housing.
I'll keep watching everything very closely in the next couple of days to see if any other strange noises appear, but as of right now everything seems to be okay.
my guess (or hope) would be the gears getting seated. W00t
I'm under the impression (or at least hoping) that it's just something wear-matching in there...
PS... Jimmy forgot to mention that "We" meant me and him... Brandon and Michael crapped out around 11 (Wusses...)...
We ended up finishing it around 4:30am...
Mostly because as the night went on we got more and more tired which lead to more and more stupid mistakes. Like me putting on all of the subframe before putting on the clutch master cylinder...
Or... Jimmy putting the battery in and bolting down the holding plates with the battery resting on the positive battery cable...
Or... Me trying to fall asleep on the creeper under the car every once and a while...
Or... Sneaking into the back of Chris's house at 3 am with a flashlight, a jack, lug wrench, 12mm socket & wrench, and a pair of needle nose pliers and getting the bolt for the steering assembly b/c Jimmy fubar'd the old one in some frustration fueled beating spree with a hammer.

hahah, at least yall got it back together...
When you said putting all the subframe on before.. i thought you were about to say before putting the transmission in... ;)
in the wee hours of the morning, frustration can lead to interesting behavior.. Once, at around 4 am, after putting the engine in my car, I got enraged at a plug wire that wouldn't click onto the distributor... needless to say parts of al 4 found themselves scattered around the building (and we decided to call it a night).
when i was doing the manual transmission swap in my car, we forgot to disconnnect the kickdown cable... so the AT was swingin for a little while.
One afternoon I almost stroked out after cleaning up the hoses and IC on my car, only to have it make a most interesting noise and die whenever i touched the gas... didn't put a clamp on tight enough and blew the uper ic hose off...
stuff like that keeps you on your toes, ya know?
