i have been having trouble with my car for the past 3 or 4 months. I have replaced the distibutor cap, coil, rotor button, spark plug wires, and spark plugs. The problem is that whenever i crank the car and run it for 10-20 minutes, the tach starts to jump all over the place, and then the car shuts down for 20 minutes and then runs fine all day. Please help

does your distro have an internal coil?

Edit: Did a quick search and its probably the coil or igniter.

If your have an internal coil and replaced the distro, that pretty much narrows it down to the igniter thingamabob

looking at the dizz from the side, there are two modules, and then the distro itself. The first has coil on it, and it as well as the main module are connect to the distro. To get to the module, you have to take the distributor all the way out

I've seen it done. :O Bought a '90 crx si one time not running for $300. The distributor was some how wedged in their and bolted down backwards!!! They didn't like it when I drove away in the car they thought had a broken timing belt 10 minutes later. :D

I'll bet $5 that it's your ignition switch. Very common problem with your model car. That and mine did the exact same thing. It's easy to replace, just take off your steering cover panels and unscrew it then grab another one from a junk yard or try cleaning your connectors.

When it quits is all your dash lights going out as well? That'll tell you if its the ignition switch or not. If it is the switch, it would pretty much die as soon as you let off the key to start it. It doesn't get worse over time, they just seemto break. When I worked at a honda shop we always had to start them outside, hold the key in between "on" and "start" to keep it running to pull into the shop. :cackle:

They don't just have to break. Mine got worse with time as the connectors went bad. I didn't have to hold the key either. If I just wiggled it enough the car would run right until it hit a bump, etc to cut the connection again. After time it did eventually get to the point where I had to hold the key to get anywhere.

Popped in a new switch. Problem fixed.

did you check all of your grounds, etc? You got an amp in there, right? make sure that hot wire isnt grounding out when you hit a bump or something. When did it start happening? Did you make any changes to the car prior to the problem occuring?

as far as the lights going out on the dash, they dont, the only thing that happens, is that either the tach will start to jump, and the motor and front end will start to bog and shake. Then the motor will just die and the check engine lights will come on. Then when i try to restart it, it will attempt to start, but normally its a 15 minute wait. The last thing i put on my car, was the tach, and about 6 months after that i noticed the tach would start to go insane, but it didnt die. The whole car shutting down thing started like 2 months ago. Thanks for all the help guys

how is the tach wired? id consider disconnecting it and see if that helps. sounds like wires are definitly getting crossed or grounding out somewhere.
