Ok so I got some kick ace video at the track that looks amazing with my new camera. I first put it in AVI format but a 17min clip was 3.5 GIG's! :O I'm thinking that's just a little more than you guys want to download lol.

Anyway I tried out putting it to Mpeg-1 but it completely sucks and I'm not watching my nice video get degraded like that. Is there anyway to put something else on my computer (like mpeg 2/4) or is that up to my video editing program?

< really thinking hard about building a new computer so I can run Adobe premiere.

How about what video editing software are you using?

Are you on a Mac or PC?

PC --> WMV is very flexible. If your video editing software doesn't support exporting to it download Windows Movie Maker (you probably already have it). SP2 comes with an updated version that's exceptional actually. Start -> Program Files -> Entertainment -> Windows Movie Maker

Mac --> I have no fucking clue but, Quicktime probably has a freeware encoding software.

Guess I really need to get the SP2. I'm not hooked up to the internet though so I wonder how hard it would be to burn a copy.

It's only about 232MB so it shouldn't be hard to burn.

If you want to try a smaller file as well go download Windows Media Encoder.

Part of that software is an import/convert feature but, I've seen it choke on some higher bitrate videos (like what it sounds like you have). Windows Movie Maker transcodes on the fly, where WME depends on your proc to handle all the video work in real time (usually can't happen)

MPEG-4

For legitimate uses, I'd suggest either XviD or DivX5.

Here's SP2 if you want to download and burn to a cdrom:

EDIT: This SP2 is for WindowsXP, not Win2000.

Thanks. I should be able to upgrade to XP with little hassle.

Keep it in AVI format and use TMPGEnc to compress it to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. It's customizable settings, and I've consistently been able to get good compression out of MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 with AWESOME quality (better than divx). Xvid is good as well.
