Is my DSL up to par?

I purchased the BellSouth Xtreme DSL for my apartment since Mediacom cable internet is considered possibly the worst provider in the nation.

However, the DSL comes in being pretty pricy at the "Xtreme" level and I'm just trying to gauge if it is performing correctly. I know it will always be slower than a good cable internet, but since it's my only real alternative I just like to know that the "Xtreme" service is actually extreme since I'm paying for it.

I did one of those test sites but I'm not sure how accurate they are. It says I download at a little over 1,500kbs. Is this more than I would expect from the base DSL service? Any other way to judge my overall speed?

DSL Reports. They have a great deal of bandwidth tests on there that will help you more accurately gauge your download speed

Also 1.5mbps down isn't too bad but, I believe DSLeX is rated at 3mpbs. So you should be getting double :D

It's rated at "Up to 3Mbps/ 384Kbps (best effort)", so in my book you should get at least 3/4's of that.

Do a couple of those tests at different sites, and copy the url of the best test to here.

I called them today and they ran some checks. The said it looks like my system should be able to hit the full 3mbs so they are sending somebody out next week.

Yeah, I have comcast down here in mobile, rated at 4 mbps. On DSL reports I have NEVER gotten a speed test over 1.5 mgs down and the fastest I ever d/l at is about 250 k/sec. I even called them and they said if they sent somebody out and they couldn't find a problem, they would charge me $80 for the visit >:(

Yeah I'm averaging around 250k which isn't bad. I've grabbed a few files around 400k though, but not as frequently as I'd like.

They said I'll have to sign something before they'll to do any chargeable work.

Well I knew something was up because I seemed to be downloading a lot better than most with a 1,500kbs downstream.


I tried out the rest of the tests at DSL reports and they say I'm around 2,700kbs, which sounds right on par. Not crazy ultra fast, but I'm a happy camper knowing that I'm actually getting about what I pay for. Being as it's DSL and rock solid doesn't hurt either.
