View Full Version : Aspeed Track Day. Let's get serious.

Since the R should be back on the road shortly I really want to get the ball rolling on having a track day towards the end of the summer at TGP.
In order to have a weekend event that will be better for most of you I will be willing to cover a majority of the cost so that more of you can attend. It will also aid in keeping the entry fee as low as possible. If the prices are still in the same ball park I don't see any reason that we can't keep entry fees in the sub $75 range.
I will try to contact the owners this week. I've talked to them in the past but I'm sure the prices have slightly altered since my last conversation.
I should also be able to get a few instructors to attend and I know of a few people on this board that should have instructor contacts as well.
If you are SERIOUSLY interest please let me know. Also, be aware that we can not make a date to satisfy everyone so you must decide if you can make a sacrifice to attend.
Since this will be our first club track event I would also like to keep it on the smaller side and depending on resources we might have to limit the number of cars on track, but remember there will hopefully be more events in the future.

I just got off the phone with the owner a few minutes ago. It looks like the price is still the same. I'm going to contact him tonight for more details.
It looks like we are going to need to get a hold of 3 instructors ( 3 cars on track at a time) which shouldn't be much of a problem.
As of right now it looks like the most that we can have as DRIVER cars is 10, but I'm gonna see if we can stretch that number a bit.
IF (and this is a big if) we can have no more than 10 cars but have other people that REALLY want to attend I'll think about getting my little EF Si track worthy enough to be a multi-driver car. That means if we get filled up I'll let the extra people trade out tracking my EF hatch every session. You won't get to drive your car, but getting to romp on a car that isn't yours isn't a bad deal (and no I won't make you pay for it if it blows up).
Also, having an ambulance on scene is an extra $500. If you plan on going and think this is a good idea for the price please say so. I for one believe that as long as we are within reasonable distance to a hospital and have ample corner workers (to put out fires, etc) that it might not be needed.

Just a quick question? Where is TGP?
Want to get my car down on a track and see how it goes.
TGP is Talledega Grand Prix Raceway, it's near Anniston just a little south of I20. It's probably no further for you than it is for us in Auburn.
http://www.tgprace.com/
I, for one, don't think we'll need an ambulance. Unless someone has a catastrophic mechanical failure then there is unlikely to be any reason for it. And I'd say the odds of that are pretty slim.

And I'd say the odds of that are pretty slim.
Why did you have to say that?
< now has $20 bet on somebody going of track and exploding into a ball of flames.

I'm down to go watch, not going to run the Accord or anything or do they let u pimp around the track....lol :pimp:

yeah, i don't think the ambulance is needed. the worst that would happen (hopefully) is mechanical failure.
on another note, i'll have a different car by then. :D. one perfect for a road coarse.

Talked to owner again and everything seems to be fine with renting track in August and there are plenty of days to pick from.
The only problem is that to keep the price lower we would really need to have the event during the week. If we do it during the week the entrance price will only be appox $55 per person. If we go with the weekend route you'll be looking at around $144 a person.
I'm thinking the best route would be to schedule it around the week or two gap between Auburns summer and fall semester for all of those taking summer classes. If somebody could provide me some dates I would appreciate it.

Ok I'm ready to put the deposit down for the track but I definitely need more willing to go than this.
I thought Aspeed was a bunch of hardcore "let's prove it on the track" guys? Where are all the big talkers at?;)
So far we have:
1. Myself.
2. Matt Harris.
3. GTI Michael.
4. 1.8t Michael ( don't think he has seen this yet but we talked about it recently).
5. Phillyd.

This isn't about kicking asses, it's about having fun. :P Personally i'm going out there to get a nice adrenaline rush, practice and become a better driver, and just basically have a good time. Doing a track day is one of the most exciting things you can do, and the more laid back everyone is the better and, most importantly, safer the environment.

True. Somebody definitely needs to bring a grill and we can all chip in for burgers.
I'll be looking into loaner helmets as well. So far it looks like we will need proper fitting helmets that meet Snell rated SA 95 or M 95 or newer standards.
I am in, just saw this thread. I would SERIOUSLY prefer a weekday, but I have class every mutha F'n day and you don't need to miss in the summer. Let us know some dates Brock and so I can see if I need to pull some strings.

Find out when your last summer class is. I'd like to make it on a weekday in between the end of summer classes and the beginning of the fall semester so everyone will have a chance of attending.

The last day of summer exams is 8/5 and the beginning of fall is 8/16. That said, if it's after the 16th, I'm only taking classes on Tues and Thurs this fall. As for me, I'm a DEFINITE and I have my own helmet. But I don't get the three cars on the track at time rule. It doesn't matter, ie I'm not asking because I'm trying to make this competitive, but every time I've been there, there's been way more than three on the track at a time, even at a non-instruction event, ie everyone drove solo. I'm only asking because it'll let more than ten of us be able to enjoy the event. Now if we don't have more than ten, it doesn't matter, but the closer you get to the date of the event, usually more people will try to join last minute. Just a thought.
Edit: Just to clarify, this isn't a drive out on the track and drive home like a trip to the dragstrip. Most are going to need to bleed the brakes before and after, and that's considering you don't eat up your pads. TGPR is small and seven turns, it's more technical than it looks, it WILL eat up brake pads and tires, so make your sure you car is up to the task before you think you can just drive out on a track day and back home again without any maintenance.

The reasons I mentioned 3 cars on track were due to the following:
1. It's what the track owner mentioned in our conversations.
2. The more new people on the track the more instructors we will have to find. This is the main reason.
3. Helmet borrowing. I doubt everyone will buy their own and I don't want to have to purchase more than I have to.
4. Safety.
Besides with such a small group of people we'll still be able to get in TONS of track time regardless of how many people are on track at the same time.
BTW the number of people has to do with the price. I'm going to talk to the owner once again to see how far we can stretch the number of drivers.
I already have 2 full track days on this track in the clockwsie direction. I really don't need any instruction at all if we are going to run it in that direction. I already have my spare brake fluid pads ready ;) . One thing I am kind of bitter about is I JUST put brand new SUCKY tires on the car. Ugh, they are horrilbe. Gonna see if I can snag some used advans for cheap before we do this.
Matt Harris
05-28-2005, 11:16 AM
I've done the track counterclockwise, which I hear is the safer direction. I know you'd be fine with it that way too, Michael, with a few laps to learn it.
I also have a helmet of my own.

I am definately coming to watch, hang out, maybe even ride if they let me (not sure about rules). However, I will probably not be able to break out the WRX because I doubt I will have money for brakes and tires, but hoepfully by then I will have saved up some money.
In other words, I just simply can't commit, but I am coming. If I have to I will pay the money in advance and come whether I track the WRX or not.
But I am definately coming. It'll be a ton of fun! And hopefully it iwll help kickstart aSpeed as we go into a new semester (I miss you people)!
I don't have money for tires or brakes for that matter either....but I am still going :D . I will just pace myself to keep either from getting to hot and if I see a lot of wear happening, I will hang it up.

5. Inspector
6. Anderson
7. VDubndizzy
8. WRboxer
9. ActiveAero
10. Instructor slot.
11. Instructor slot. (maybe, depends if the track owner will let me squeeze in one more)
Since several of you have already been on track I don't think it will be a big deal if we only have one instructor. If need be we can get the instructor to ride with each of us TGP newbs for a few laps to sign us off. If we get the instructor I'm thinking we will I have a feeling we'll get signed off pretty quick unless you are a complete moron.
We we also keep the run groups very small regardless of how you have ran on track before. This is our first event and safety needs to be at the top of our list. Besides, with only 10 drivers and the whole track to ourselves for the day I think we'll probably get more track time than any of us will know what to do with, small run group or not.

The reason you are not on the list is because you kept using the term spectate, so I was unclear that you wanted to drive. Spectate and participate are two very different words.
The number of drivers is limited to 10 because of the track costs. They run a certain rate for 6-10 drivers and going over that by even 1 person would put us into the next price bracket. Since I'm funding the majority of the costs myself to keep the entrance price low for everyone I did not wish to go into the next price bracket on our first event.
Sam, you were the instructor I had in mind from the start. :P

Jesus, you sound like a freaking girl. Think about it, if you didn't EXPLICITLY tell Brock you could/want to go, then obviously you're not going to be on the list. It's not like Brock sits around all day, calling everyone just to make sure they still want do/don't want to go.
Instead of acting like you got dicked, b/c of your lack of planning/communication, you should be thankful to Brock for putting it together. I don't think you realize that putting together an event like this takes time and he laid down his own money for a deposit.
EDIT:In retrospect, I think you should also be apologetic for coming off like an a-hole.
Sorry, I don't see how I came off as an A-hole? I said like a week ago I would PROBABLY be watching, but then the last post said I was in. I said the whole time I would $55 regardless to save my spot on the list in case I could drive (which now I know that I can). Yes, maybe that wasn't very clear, and I understand that, I just wanted to make sure that was the reason. So I asked.
I don't recall giving ANY indication that I was unsympathetic to Brock for putting this together, but its kind of hard to look grateful when you aren't invited, but here it is:
Thanks Brock for putting this together, I understand it was a miscommunication, and I wish I could participate, but I will just catch the next train.
It was clear enough for Vdubndizzy to say "Hey look, you shafted AdamWRX," so I don't think I'm out of line. Don't be so defensive Mr. Wiggie.
Well you guys have fun.

Same to you, chief. :happyFU:
Like I told you Adam, you're more than welcome to come along and ride a few sessions with me if you'd like.

The power of greyskull says I can knock you off the list and/or keep you from watching. ;)

Oh and BTW how many of you guys that don't have roadcourse experience have actually autocrossed before?
It would be nice if most of us had at least some experience given that we will probably have a limited number of instructors.
I have several run several auto-x's and have done VERY well. However, no track expierence here.

I am sure he can keep your name on the list just in case anyone ends up not being able to go... :foxnews:

Damnit, this is what I get for not reading aSpeed for a few months...
Well, since it seems that Adam has gotten Michaels spot, is it ok for me to assume the next open spot due to a backout is mine? I posted in the original thread that I would definitely be down, I just didn't know that there was a new thread. Either way, no excuses, but if anyone decides they can't go I would love to take their spot.
And either way, huge thanks to Brock for fronting most of the money to keep this cheap. Last I checked the track was a grand a day, so he's putting up half the money himself it seems.
