was enjoying some tandem volvo dorifto in the rain yesterday when cruising down a hill (off the gas :D ) the car inexplicably dies  poped the clutch, nothing. coast off to the side, poped the hood, gave everything a once over, hit the starter and it spins rather easily, not even the slightest hint of trying to run.
hoped in with sam, and then me n donnie went back after it stopped raining to check things over, everything "looks" normal, nothing bizzare in the coolant or oil, nothing wierd on any of the plugs, cam gear turns with the motor, no slack in the timing belt.... but yet its mysteriously out of time. motor wont make a full revolution by hand :(
retime everything, still no dice on the turnover, start taking shit off the car, valve cover comes off and there's pieces of exploded shim all over the place. great. one of the followers is sunk way down in its hole. even better. cam comes out and another shattered shim is found (Still in the follower tho), tear the top end down, i've fragged all the intake valves, destroyed the guide on the #2 runner, added some speed dimples to that combustion chamber (but not too bad, it'll live), customized the top of the piston a bit, and generally ruined my day.
whilst putting a stopgap head on the car with the shitty stock cam we finally realized what'd caused everything to go south, dowel pin in the cam sheared off flush, looks to be a defect, and that allowed things to start to get outa phase.
