Blue Devil Lives!! When GM's vice chairman speaks of an ultra-performance Corvette, we listen
BOB GRITZINGER
Posted Date: 6/29/05
General Motors vice chairman Bob Lutz won’t confirm this car exists, but he is not saying it doesn’t. We first wrote about Chevrolet’s ultra-performance Corvette—dubbed Blue Devil, most likely to catch the attention of GM CEO and Duke Blue Devil grad Rick Wagoner—shortly before the sixth-generation Corvette debuted at the Detroit auto show in January (AW, Dec. 22 and 29, 2004). We asked Lutz about the car during a recent exclusive interview with AutoWeek.

“Let’s just say [Corvette chief engineer] Dave Hill is not a guy who likes playing second fiddle to any high-performance car on the road,” said Lutz. “My guess is we’re going to find a way to do something beyond the Z06, that would be at a much higher price point, and which would compete with some of the leading high-performance cars of the world.”
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/JaMMin2525/bluedevil_rear.jpg
Lutz said the car may be delayed while the company focuses most of its engineering might on pulling ahead profit-making vehicles like its next-generation large sport/utilities and pickups.

“But there is certainly no lack of desire on anyone’s part to establish the supremacy of the Corvette,” says Lutz.

Spied on the Nurbürgring, Blue Devil appears to be living up to the earlier hype. Eyewitnesses said the car sounds supercharged, confirming reports the engine is likely a blown version of the Z06’s 7.0-liter V8, producing upward of 600 hp. Look for lightweight carbon fiber body parts to reduce weight to about 2900 pounds.

Pricing will likely start somewhere around $100,000 if and when the car makes production in 2006.

Notice it doesn't have the side moldings. ;) Seriously, that's a sick weight for a package with OEM displacement and boost.

Damn...all that torque in a 2900lb car? But Id rather spent 100gs on other cars though.

I personally would rather have 3 35K cars, then 1 100K car.

But it is a sick ride.

I'm sorry but I only know Imports and stuff, is this suppose to be like a special version of the Vetts straight from Chevy itself or something like a Roush(sp?)Mustang kinda thing?

Looks sweet from what I'm seeing, I'm sure it would be a well-worth 100k :steering:

Why so you can get stomped into the ground? This thing is faster than the 200K Ford GT, will hand most any Ferrari it's ass maybe even an Enzo if they produce it the way it sits, and still only costs 100K.

This car would be the ultimate Vette, it would be the lowest cost super car you could buy and would cream almost anything on the road. Look for it to be able to run with the Konigsegg, All Lambo's, and More than likely base Enzo's. This car if brought to production will raise the bar for any and all other car manufacturer. It would basicly be like buying your very own C6R. Just pray that Chevy can push it through the bean counters because as it stands they are the only obsticle to face.

Yes it will pretty much stomp anything into the ground at that price and specs, but heck so will the "normal" 427 Z06.

However: The Ford GT isn't 200k (150k) and I think you might be pushing it with saying it'll run with the Konigsegg. The CCR version would still have 200hp more than the blue devil AND it's lighter than 2,900lbs. If I remember correctly the CCR's trap in the low 140's stock and I'm pretty positive it will take more than 600 crank hp for the Vette to do that.

Regardless the Z06 past and present is one of the best cars ever made for the price. Now if they would only get rid of the leaf spring rear suspension.:D They swapped to a true coilover capable rear suspension setup on the C5R so it's obviously better and would make the street car even more potent in the corners.

Not to nit pick but not one single Ford GT was sold for 150K...not a one. Everyone one was sold for 190 to 200K.

The Blue Devil is said to be the ultimate production vette, it will have well over 600 Crank HP if it has C6R Heads, Cam, Exhaust, and a Supercharger. With the similar setup on the C5R block and heads that motor was making in the neighborhood of 800 HP...to the ground. Now as for the suspension I have it on good authority that their will be a race prep suspension that would include coil over suspension at all corners. At 2900 lbs, with a motor making a modest 700 or so at the ground and a suspension ready for race I would expect this car to be terror for Ferrari and the like.

Do you honestly think that the Blue Devil is going to sell for MSRP? Lol I surely hope not. Going by the listed MSRP is the only way to make a true comparison.

Nobodies arguing that it will be the badest production Vette made and I assure you we are well aware of what those engines can produce. That said, I wouldn't go and start inflating HP figures before the thing is even released.

Who said anything about inflating? I have some very credible inside sources that have been telling me about this car before the C6 was even released. At the time it was just a bit of coffee talk and then it was on to the Dick Harrell Camaro's but now it has resurfaced and it makes me glad that stuff like this gets told to me...makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

What was funny was watching all the guys over at LS1 Tech argue that the next Z06 was going to be a 6.4 L :cackle: I mean seriously a 6.4? I kept telling them that they were going to get their wish but ofcoarse the internet scandal kept them from believing me.

I am not inflating the numbers at all, 700 HP is what this thing is going to make...you can't slap a SuperCharger on a h/c 427 like that and not make it or very close to it. Now if I was speculating as to what the power would be I would have to say that it would come with
666 HP :D

Its kinda like bench racing...you have a good idea of how fast its supposed to be, you just havent run it yet.

Bench-racers unite!!

Everyone knew about this car before the C6 was released. Heck I've probably been hearing about it for almost a year now (if not more). Your inside sources must not be very good. ;)

Like WRXboxer said lets not start bench racing a car that hasn't been released.

Oh and BTW I'm not saying it will have 600hp but it's not a stetch to think that they'd only add another 100hp with it. If you want to get technical you could also say that there is no way a 427 engine should "only" be making 500 crank hp, because believe it or not that isn't very much for the engine size.

This just in. STOCK Z06 lap time at Nurburgring.

7:40!!!

This time puts the new Z06 at the top of the list in performance for a stock car. It ranks higher than any stock Porsche 996 car (996 turbo, GT2, GT3, etc), any stock BMW, any stock Lamborghini, and it runs the same approximate time as the McLarian F1. The only stock cars known to run a faster time are the Porsche Carrera GT and the Koenigsegg CCR.

Not sure though what the Enzo runs, but with a near $400,000 price difference between the two cars, does it really matter?

That is just insane.

Though the Radical SR3 did it in 7:19 on it's first lap, also a street car and about the same price as a Z06. Yeah so maybe it's a touch more impractical than the Z06 but who's counting. :P

I hope those retarded Britts choked on their words when the new Z06 with it's old "truck" suspension skull drags every car they've ever tested.

You and me both man, but the regular Z06 is out of my price range so I know that wanting this bad boy is going to be a rediculous and un doable wish.

Saw a bilboard on the way back from P-Cola yesterday...the new Z06 was on it. Get ready boys because videos of these cars are going to start poping up in about a month or so....and so are astounding individual dyno results. I can't wait to see the first guys face who does full exhaust, heads, cam, and intake....It will be like "holy shit I can't believe that I am seeing over 650 HP to the rear wheels NA". Go from there and think about what it is going to be like when they start modding out the Devil "Holy Shit I can't believe I am seeing 850 RWHP!!"
