I went to my first autocross last Saturday. It was a novice school put on by the Atlanta autox club. It was at the turner field parking lot downtown. It was an all day event so we got in a lot of runs, about 15 total.
My car is still stock except for the mods the previous owner installed: koni shocks, trd front sway bar and 17” wheels & tires.
There were a lot of S2000s, minis, miatas, a GTO, and some subies.
They weren’t recording times since it was just for fun but they had the timer set up so you could see how people did.
I started out running a 49.XX. Then after a few runs I got it down to 46’s. In the afternoon I started to push it a little more and ran some 45’s and 44’s. Oversteer is fun! :D The rear end came out on several occasions but I only completely lost it once. My best run of the day was a 43.6. The instructors with their turbo miatas on race rubber were doing 39’s and 40’s so I think I did pretty good. I didn’t get to see everyone else’s times but the best I saw out of the novices was a modded STI running 43’s.
If you haven’t been before I highly recommend doing a novice school as opposed to a regular event since you get so many more runs in. It would have taken me at least 3 regular events to get in the same amount of experience.
I'll probably go to some of the upcoming events if I can fit them in my schedule.
Cliff's notes: I'm a much better driver now and I got the worst sunburn ever! Don't forget your SPF 5000 when you go to one of these!
