WHISPERS: Toyota Planning New 250-hp Scion tC
Date Posted 08-11-2005
TOKYO — The grapevine in Japan is whispering about a hot, new 250-horsepower pure sport coupe from Toyota, coming next year, which would also double as a new Celica in Japan.
Japan's moles say they've uncovered secret plans for a new pure sport coupe from Toyota, apparently based around the Scion tC. The unnamed model, due in 2006, has 2.4-liter power, like the tC, yet is good for a reputed 250 horsepower.
Toyota is aiming at Honda's stellar Integra Type R (the more exotic, faster version of America's Acura RSX). And the idea would also be to inject some extra speed and enthusiast muscle into the tC.
America will soon bid farewell to the Celica, so this new 250-hp sport coupe would be a welcome replacement. Across in Japan, the talk is Toyota would rebadge it as the eighth-generation Celica.
While the Celica as we know it is 1.8-liter, the story goes that this new model would jump up to a special high-performance 2.0-liter motor, which may be called 2AZ-GE.
What this means to you: Biggest problem with Scion? No power. Thus, this super tC sounds super-cool; let's hope it makes it into the showrooms here.

I doubt it will dethrone the ITR but it sounds interesting.
It'll be the fastest Camry Ever!

Sounds cool to me. However, 250hp is getting pretty high for a FWD car if handling is a main priority. Should be interesting.

Sounds pretty reasonable...esp. since domestic manufactures like Mopar and GM put out comparable cars that are FWD...ie SRT-4/Cobalt...I'm interested to see what becomes of it! I hope it's N/A.

thats cool! BUT i don't see it beating the ITR with its nearly 3000lbs curb weight.. still glad to see manufacturers competing! :headbang:
edit: how much does the new ITR weigh? the older one (brock's model) weighed 2500ish right?

Both the new and old weigh right around 2,600lbs even in stock trim. Mine weighed in at 2,560lbs with a full tank of gas and full interior minus the spare tire. 1997 models were about 50lbs lighter (no A/C or rear wiper from the factory).

Why you gotta hate? ITR is a great handling car and it is FWD. As is the MINI and lots of other great cars. Power is a limitation for the FWD configuration but handling is not. In spite of its differing characteristics, in a properly designed and set-up car it works magnificently. And as far as power limitations, that is also a function of power delivery. A turbocharged FWD car is more likely to be tough to drive than a SC or NA FWD car, obviously.
In conclusion, inform yourself and stop the hate!
Yeah Rick why you gotta hate bitch!?!?!?!?! :mono:

I'm not hating on the ITR or Mini. I just want toyota to quit chasing the ITR and trying to become FWD king. Bring back the AE or supra. :(

Considering the source take this with a grain of salt... (taken from a internet forum)
But apparently they have a FWD and RWD version of this "mystery car"... no final decision has been made what configuration it will be in when it hits production. So who knows *shrug*
