Multi-motion sensor chip can detect essentially every movement you make with the controller including tilt and twisting motions and distance from the screen. The expansion ports allow it to be fitted in a variety of fashions to take advantage of the controllers sensor abilities.
IMO Nintendo has possibly just changed the way we will play games which is awesome. This could light the fires under a ton of game developers to create awesome new gameplay mechanics.
I also like how the analog stick is seperate and reviewers so far say that although it seems weird it is actually very natural and comfortable feeling. Also, turn it on it's side and guess what it becomes....the old school NES controller (for playing all of the orginal NES games). :)
The president of Square/Enix (aka Final Fantasy) and Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear) think the new controller design is awesome and that is a very good thing.
Although I'll probably own all three consoles Sony and Microsoft seem to be in a war to make the fanciest piece of hardware out there the most ghz and zillion other features. Nintendo seems to be the only one trying to actually do something different for us gamers and their console is supposed to come in $200 CHEAPER than both the Xbox 360 and PS3.
Go Nintendo.
i doubt it will catch on.

Oh really? When I saw that I cancelled all plans of buying a XB360 or PS3 and am getting that on day 1. They have a lot of awesome launch titles that I can't wait to see. The best part about the Nintendo controller is that they are allowing third-party controllers to be developed around their core controller. Basically you have a controller "shell" that connects to the base Nintendo controller... so you have all the abilities of the Nintendo controller and whatever else the third-party controller adds.
Also, who cares about Square/Enix? They are a now deprecated development and publishing house that's just barely struggling to make it by (that's why they merged in the first place).
It's interesting that all the talent that Square had left after the merger once their contracts were up. They formed a new development house called Mistwalker and are creating two XB360 exclusive titles, Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon. I can't wait for both. You got Nubuo Uematsu who composed the majority of the soundtracks for our most beloved Square games... you have Akira Toriyama doing character design (most famous for Chrono Trigger and DBZ)... and last (and definately not least) you have Hironobu Sakaguchi the father of the entire Final Fantasy series (he came up with the idea for FF and was also the producer on almost every single one). Not to mention the fact that you have a lot of the programmers and artists that left Square and joined Mistwalker. A lot of veterans in there who know how to make great games, given a kick ass budget by Microsoft, and complete creative freedom to develop the games they want. I can't wait :D One key thing of note is that the last time these three teamed up, Chrono Trigger was the result. And that game was simply kick ass.
The most interesting part is that a lot of the big-names are forsaking Square/Enix, Sony, and Sega to start/join other companies that are developing Microsoft and Nintendo exclusives. I think the death toll is about to sound for the Sony console unless they can generate some buzz... a lot of large Japanese magazines are hyping up the XB360 and Revolution and aren't saying much about the PS3. And if Sony botches in their home market (and the strongest market they have by far), it isn't going to be long before Sony joins the ranks of Atari and Sega.

I'm going to assume that this is of course only in reference to the Video Game market and not Sony as a whole. I seriously doubt that the PS3 is going to drag down the entire Sony conglomerate.

I hope that isn't the case. We've been using the same controller design for 20 years. It's about time I'm able to control several directions of motion at once.
Moving a character around while being able to point arms, guns, camera, etc in a completely different direction by merely pointing at the screen will make a ton of action adventure/FPS much much better. If it works out it'll be essentially a 3D movement mouse.
Idea of other possible controller configurations using the main sensor remote:

The concept behind the controller is great. As far as the execution, I have some doubts about the button placement. But the biggest thing is, how will this be incorperated into the games? If it is thoroughly embraced by the software houses, then we could see some very original and groundbreaking stuff. If not, well, then it's just another useless peripheral.
