People say that all the time, but I've never heard of it actually happening, so I seriously doubt it. If anything I'd be more worried about the lack of protection for the lip of my rims.
Personally, I like a little bit of stretched tire in certain applications, but not to some of those extremes.

Personally I love the look, but yeah, I've never heard of the tire bead actually coming off... Most likely because those people use common sense when they go to the track and have some less expensive wheels and better fitting tires to race on... comon now...

Anyone know WHY they do it like that in Europe?
I spent the whole summer in Western Europe doing study abroad. I had this argument several times when I went to a few euro tunner shows. A lot of them really didn’t know why they did it, mostly they just said it was the "in" thing to do. One guy I talked to said he couldn’t fit much more meat on it he was running a 215/40/16 if I remember, but he had coil-overs and the car was almost tucking a little bit of the tire but he had rolled the fenders. Or at least that’s what I think he said, there was a bit of a language barrier. I dont understand why they do it over there because witht the exception of some motorways their city roads suck ass, I can imagine that there are alot of bent wheels.
VDUBNDizzy
10-05-2005, 12:08 PM
It's supposedly because of variances in local ordinances in some places that stipulate the tire can't extend beyond the wheel or exceed a certain tire width all together on a car whose weight doesn't justify it (rolling resistance, pollution concerns in Europe, etc). So to run wide wheels, you have to stretch. Yes, their roads suck. And unfortunately it has grown into the "in" thing to do, mostly in Europe.

I guess drifting gets you absolutely zero lateral force?
*ahem* WRONG!
AadosX
10-05-2005, 12:57 PM
Well, it's maily done just for looks. In drifting offset is a big thing... because it looks better. Now, you can have a better looking wheel, better offset, and/or a bigger lip with a wider wheel. BUT, having your car slammed is also a big thing... which wont work unless you stretch your tire so you can lower your car more. Also, traction ends up being the same anyways, so there is no 'lack of traction,' Inspector... because all the tire is still there, there is just a wider wheel, which passes the edge of the fender... therefor there couldn't be more tire either way. As far as curbing wheels?... give me a break... that would only be because you're an idiot that can't drive... and has nothing to do with stretched tires.
Now, I don't know anything about in Europe. But, I have heard of the maximum allowed tire width thing, so that sounds like it makes sense...

AadosX
10-05-2005, 02:40 PM
What I'm saying is this...
It's not that the tire size is wrong in your book... it's the wheel size. With the wheel sticking out past the fender, and the car lowered to effectively the wheel, it's impossible to have more tire. It's either the stretched setup, or a smaller wheel with the same sized tire...

They're putting smaller tires on their wheels because if they put "snug" fitting tires on their cars... well they can't... THE FENDERS ARE IN THE WAY...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v54/nsbghettojeep/Cars/redmk3jettaboser.jpg
Look at front tires on that car... If he tried to put 245 or 255 size tires on those wheels they would be touching the fender... I don't know about you but I'm not a big fan of my fenders and tires arguing over the same space while I'm driving...

Thanks for admiring it :D . It's kinda odd that so many people do actually like it. I never thought it would cause as many reactions as it does. Kinda makes me sad :( to get rid of it. I do wish the wheels were not curbed, but for $800 for wheels and almost new tires from another dubber, I couldn't beat that. That would make it look that much better.

Stretching tires is "usually" an obvious excess of money. Who buys rims wider then what they need? When i was shopping for rims...i could have easily coughed up an extra $500 for some 17x9.5 rims. However, not only was there no reason to go that wide, but the extra $500 for a wider rim and no ability to fit a wider tire simply didnt make sense. Its purely a look to go for. If someone thinks its worth the greatly added cost for the look, then so be it.
I think its rice to a certain extreme...that bmw is not rice, as the extent of the stretch is not very extreme. But some of those cars that look like they have a 205width tire on a 9inch rim is just plain fricken ridiculous.
