View Full Version : School Me Please (Intake Question)

What is the difference between a short ram aftermarket intake
for example:
http://focus.c-f-m.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=381
and a regular "hi-flo" aftermarket intake such as:
http://focus.c-f-m.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=381
Performance gains seem comparable. In general terms, Is there an advantage with one over the other?
Also K&N makes one:
http://focus.c-f-m.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=901
Seems pricey, but claims that it is quiter than competitors intake systems. This is a plus for me, I'm really not too interested in increasing noise with my performance. Is this true, are the metal intakes loud under throttle?
Sorry in advance for what may seem to be newbie questions, but
I have a few bucks (thanks Uncle Sam) so I thought I might do something fun for myself. Open to suggestions.

General, an "intake" will do more for sound than performance. If you say you don't want it to sound "louder," maybe you shoudn't consider an aftermarket intake...

Keep the stock air box and get a better drop in filter, those 3 you posted are just going to suck hot air, unless u fine one that puts it in the fenderwell its not worth it imo.

I suggest an intake adapter like the FELIX, or some domestic adaptor systems, or jut the good ole DROP in filters, K&N is a good option, and other things are possible as well. I am sure apexi or injen make adaptors or even filter elements for the G35

Most intakes produce a "good" loudness only during full throttle acceleration so the sound it makes shouldn't be big issue. It's not like trying to pick an exhaust. You won't even notice you have an intake in most daily driving situations.

you should get a coldair intake, the cheaper ones aren't that loud. but if you don't want any sound change, i have to agree with everyone else, don't get an aftermarket intake

From what I been reading on www.G35driver.com, everyone on there gets the Z-tube and JWT popcharger or some kind of intake with it. Just read on there and it will tell U everything U need to know. Shouldn be too loud from what I read but should give a good sound at high RPM's.

Just wondering why if you have a g35 are u looking at intakes for a focus?

Put a big turbo on it, then it'll REALLY suck. :D

from what i know on the G35 they have added much more sound deadening material for the engine bay than really needed (they need to put some in the back so you can't hear the exhaust as much). with the short ram intake it will be slightly louder in the cockpit due to increase in flow (which happens with any aftermarket intake). however, the cold air intake will isolate the sound down away from the cockpit providing less sound inside the car. BUT in both applications the exhaust will typically sound somewhat louder. the K&N drop in is a good idea for your wants, but the increase in performance is not great.
knowing how loud the exhaust is already on the G35's, I probibly wouldn't worry too much about being annoyed by extra sound.
It is your choice what you want to do. Good Luck :)

Is it a cockpit? Or a cabin?

Doesn't look like either to me. :D

If I were you I would just do a drop in K&N filter cause those intakes arnt going to do much for your car. I was going to make a cai but it would have been a waist of money cause I'm going to turbo my ka in a few months (watch out sr guys) so I just installed a K&N filter

Even the K&N filter...waste of money IMO. If you want it to sound cool, get an intake. If you don't, you are wasting your money b/c the performance IWILL NOT perceptibly change.
PS - nobody here has an SR, only built and/or turbod KAs ;)
