View Full Version : WTF??? I hate my transmission

As you can probably guess by the title, it has happened again. I was getting ready to replace the motor mount (that has been destroyed by 3 previous tranny rebuilds because it was the only mount holding up the engine for weeks at a time) when I noticed fluid on the sub-frame and bell housing of the transmission. There were also small puddles of the fluid on the ground where I had been parking for the past couple of days. As soon as I smelled it I knew exactly what it was... fucking gear oil :enforce: .

It's a really slow leak because there wasn't much build up of fluid inside the bell housing and the puddles under the car are relatively small. Either way, the tranny has to come back out again so I can figure out exactly where the gear oil is coming from.

I have no clue why this keeps happening. My theories for the leaking gear oil this time are that the weld from R&R has cracked (not likely), a bad seal, or a spider gear decided to shoot through the bell housing again.

If the diff blew again, I'm probably going to resort to getting a new tranny or hopefully be able to convince my parents that a Quaife LSD is the best alternative.

The only cause for all these tranny problems that I can think of is that the busted motor mount let the engine move around too much and caused the halfshafts to put huge amounts of force on the spider gears causing them to snap. The motor mount has been busted since the first tranny rebuild, but I don't know if such a small problem like that could break all of these diffs... any guesses?

I hope you are joking about the mount being busted since the beginning. If so that is EXACTLY what the problem is. I would almost bet on it. Please don't tell me a simple $15 mount has been broken this whole time and caused all of this. You have to remember mounts although they might seem like something simple are very important since they HOLD UP EVERYTHING. Vibration=bad.

energy suspension makes poly motormount inserts for my car and they are 30 bucks a set. DO they make them for your car too?

I think a quafe would explode as well, that wheel hop is bad mang.

I'm not positive that the motor mount is the cause but it seems like it could be a possibility. The motor mount was a lot more expensive than $15, I'm not really sure how much because it was a gift, but either way it will be installed after I put the tranny back in this time and HOPEFULLY I won't have to see the inside of my bell housing for a long time.

Energy Suspension does make motor mount inserts for my car, but from what I found when I looked at websites a while back was that you had to buy the $130 bushing kit for the whole car to get the inserts... they didn't sell the inserts by themselves for my car. I just went the cheap way and used window weld and it works about the same.

I'm gonna start pulling the tranny at 10:00am and get as far as I can before dark. I would like to have it back in by dark, but that all depends on how fast the turnaround is with R&R. Then we're gonna clean the house up and have a keg party 8) . Anybody who wants to come by and watch or help is welcome. We might get the keg in the afternoon so there will be free beer for people who help out :D .

I know they sell both the full kits and the engine mounts seperate for alot of cars so I'd look around some more. Don't cheap out in that area. Its a whole lot better than having to drop your tranny and not being able to race your car.

I'm telling you that having a blow mount is a HUGE problem when launching. It is the main reason alot of people blow diffs if I'm not mistaken. I wish OB or Justin would chime in.

Update:

The spider gears are fine, we dropped the tranny and there were no holes in the bell housing. The slow leak was coming from where a pin (from the old bell housing) should have been. The pin is there to align the two parts of the tranny case.I really don't know why it just started leaking a few days ago but oh well. I transfered the pin from the old bell housing into the new one and everything is running again pretty well. I'll keep watching it over the next few days to see if the leak will continue, but as far as I know everything is back to normal.

I don't think that the motor mount can directly break your diff, by pressure or anything else. I'm not sure though. However it can definitely cause wheel hop or shudder which will kill a diff in a hurry.
