I'm looking at an '07 Mazdaspeed3 with 2k miles for sale up in virginia. My question is this: is it a problem that his bank has the title to the car? He said the bank couldn't guarantee that I'd get the title that day if i paid with a cashiers check, they might put a hold on it. I would much rather get the title that day before I leave, but do you think it'd be an issue if he mailed me the title? What do you guys think?

Is there any other form of payment that you can use? When I bought my DSM I was in the same situation and I absolutely had to have the title and driving back home that day. I ended up wiring the money with him watching and it was good to go.

In reality, a bank isn't going to fuck you over unless the money doesn't go through so I wouldn't really worry about it. Throw some fake tags on and keep low.

I got a 80 in a 60 on my way home with no tags, no insurance on the car and the bill of sale wasn't signed..... doh

What part of Va?

You should be able to trust the bank. I have done this before. Just make sure you get them to overnight the title, so if it does get lost, there is at least a tracking number.

I always deal with titles. No title, no deal. I know that a buddy of mine bought a bike..no title, lady said it was coming, never got it and found out it was salvage bike a week later. Another buddy bought a bike, dude said the title was at the bank and would mail it...never heard from the dude again.

The only time that I got a car with no title is when My Biz law professor hooked me up with one and then mailed it to me. The car was free.

If there s money involved I wouldn't do it. That's the bottom line.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm going to call the bank to see what the best method of payment is.
The car is near Charlottesville, VA. I think I'm going to fly up a week from saturday, drive down to my parents cabin in waynesville, NC. Then on sunday it's tail of the dragon time! :D Anyone else up for tail of the dragon on august 5th?

Alex,

If the title is not at his local branch he should be able to have it sent there so that when you make the deal he can payoff the note and get the title immediately.

Good luck!

Well it's not really set in stone yet. I'll let you know if I buy the plane ticket.

Man, two of the much finer examples of a certain make and model under one owner. Would be sweet.

Yeop, that's what I did for the GSR. If you are taking a loan out for the car, you can have your bank get the title from the other bank before signing. It's a sticky situation but if u push back on both banks, they will do this.

Yeah it would :( Too bad the MR2 can't haul dogs and tow a trailer. I do hope Alex's MR2 goes to another great owner.
