Since we have all of the stunting talk lately I thought it would be an interesting discussion. The radio station I listen to in the morning has been having the debate all week and has been raising some good points. In Alabama it is not recognized as a sport (this came from the mouth of a cheerleading coach).
I for one don't think it is a sport on the high-school level. There is no regular schedule of statewide competition. Its not like "hey man did you hear the cheerleaders are 7-0 after last nights game?".
Before any cheerleader people go off on me here is a point no one addressed during the radio debate. Why in the world does it matter if its a "sport" or not? I take Tae-kwon-do and its not a sport....its an art. Yeah we train and have regular competition but Tae-kwon-do itself is not a sport and I for one could care less. Does it make something better because it is a sport? Of course not. If you train hard at something and are bad A at it you shouldn't care about the technical name.
Besides, the only true sports are racing, bullfighting, and rock climbing. The others are just games. (quote by some old famous dude)

Cheerleading is not a sport unless there is external competition involved. Most High School cheerleading is a joke, but some squads are very talented and do compete on both a state and national level. However I believe this is a relatively small percentage. Even a fair percentage of colleges do not have competitive cheering squads. Auburn's isn't as far as I know. Therefore it is simply an activity that requires athletic skill. If, however, competition is involved, then I think it seems appropriate to label it a sport.

You forgot cock fighting. How can we overlook El Macho Borracho, the most winning'est fighting cock in all of Me-hee-co?
This has got to be the coolest, and most thought provoking thread in the history of man.

I had to give up football my senior year as an undergrad because of a congenital nerve condition that was causing me some problems. THe cheerleaders practiced right next to our practice fields, it looked like fun, a way to stay on the sidelines without having any real responsibility :D , and the girls were cute. So I decided, what the heck!
And it turned out to be a lot of fun, until I blew out my ankle that is. And I must say, the perks of being a cheerleader far outweigh those of being a football player.

I am giving a speech friday on why cheerleading is a sport! Anyways, I do not believe that cheerleading is a sport when it comes to high school girls who are cheering for other sports teams. I will say though, that all through high school I can on co-ed all star squads and all we did was train and train and train and train to compete against other squads... That was a sport... If you wanna get technical, cheerleading is not a sport, but it definitly takes an athlete to do it.... Anyone who disagrees, we will go out to the intramural fields early one day and you can show me how easy it is!!!
I love posting on here! Who ever knew it could be so fun!! And to think, I used to give Jeremy a hard time for being on forums all the time!!!
Love, Marlee

first off let me say that I think it's pretty funny that the hottest topic on the scar forum right now is cheerleading.
next, i tend to agree with brock, why does it matter whether or not it is a sport. cheerleaders always get so bent out of shape when someone says it isnt. that never made sense to me. they always seem way to worried about what others think the label of what they are doing is. wierd.
Personally I think it is a sport for some and not for others. as matt and marlee have pointed out if its done for competition then yes it's sport, but if not then no it isnt. but i also think that it depends on the nature of why someone is doing it. say a girl or guy is on a competiting squad, but they are more interested in doing it and having fun than beating other squads, then i dont think its a sport for that person. if there isnt a motivating drive to beat someone else at it then it can't be sport. but I will say that from seeing what I've seen of some competitions they are sport.
to add a little bit of info on another topic my engine won't be ready until after spring break which sucks. the block won't be completed until around tuesday or wednesday of next week, and since it has to be shipped by truck from Cali then it won't get here until the middle of spring break at the earliest, and I won't be here waiting on it. so the week after spring break looks like it'll be done.

And I think there is a very good quote from Van Wilder that needs to be said...
"Write that down!" I'd much rather be tossing girls around than hitting guys.
. And I must say, the perks of being a cheerleader far outweigh those of being a football player.
I don't know, a multimillion dollar signing bonus and pay rate of a couple mill. a year for being a good professional football player might beat tossing around cute girls. Chances of it happening are a lot less likely, but if it did, man, I sure could use that cash.

Yeah but what about that hard core football shit that lasted 2 weeks? I'd much rather have been on the sidelines of one of those games. Cause all the cheerleaders were strippers and whores! :D
