Honda's hydrogen-powered saloon will go on sale in 2008, and will be almost identical to the FCX concept seen first in 2006.

The true benefit of hydrogen propulsion is its range. The FCX produces 134hp and will cover 354 miles on one tank of hydrogen, plus it can be fueled at home and produces zero emissions.

This is all done in a car that offers as much comfort and style as any modern car in the class. The production FCX will be revealed at the LA show next month, before going on sale in America and Japan in 2008.

No prices have been announced, and considering this will be the first ever hydrogen-powered model to be mass-marketed, we wouldn't like to guess at what Honda thinks is a reasonable list price for its groundbreaking model.

The only dead-cert is that, as the first zero-emission car to provide the same levels of comfort, style and practicality as a standard modern car, it will be a popular choice.

Interesting. Wonder how much they are going to charge or if they are going to do some goofy lease thing like GM did with the EV1.

And getting hydrogen @ home could be intresting.

Im really excited to see this taking place! Ive always wanted to see how good/bad hydrogen powered vehicles operate in the real world. Hopefully Honda will see success.

Eh..thats not a fuel cell powered car.

A hydrogen fuel cell doesnt have a "tank of hydrogen" its like ..sandwiched layers of some type of compound with hydrogen in it that produce electrical current. I dont know much about it but there IS a difference between "hydrogen powered" and "hydrogen fuel cell powered" two different concepts

fuel cell is a electrochemical energy conversion device. It produces electricity from external supplies of fuel (on the anode side) and oxidant (on the cathode side). These react in the presence of an electrolyte. Generally, the reactants flow in and reaction products flow out while the electrolyte remains in the cell. Fuel cells can operate virtually continuously as long as the necessary flows are maintained.

Fuel cells are different from batteries in that they consume reactant, which must be replenished, while batteries store electrical energy chemically in a closed system. Additionally, while the electrodes within a battery react and change as a battery is charged or discharged, a fuel cell's electrodes are catalytic and relatively stable.

Many combinations of fuel and oxidant are possible. A hydrogen cell uses hydrogen as fuel and oxygen as oxidant. Other fuels include hydrocarbons and alcohols. Other oxidants include air, chlorine and chlorine dioxide.[1]

So in short..This is a hydrogen combustion car from the sound of it. It uses a recipricating engine that burns hydrogen.

A fuel cell would use a hydrogen reaction to generate electrical energy to power an electric motor similar to a battery.

You sure about that? It seems to meet the above definition to me:

The FCX’s fuel cell stack is a PEMFC (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) electrical generation device that employs an electrochemical reaction between hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) to directly convert chemical energy into electrical energy. This can be viewed as the reverse of the principle of electrolysis, in which an electrical current is used to separate water (H2O) into hydrogen and oxygen. Honda has created a clean-running system that is capable of continuous electrical generation when supplied with hydrogen and oxygen, simultaneously generating electricity and water, with no CO2 or other harmful emissions whatsoever.

Oh awesome, So it IS fuel cell powered.

I didint see anything conclusive in the article But last i heard Fuel cell technology was too expensive to be viable, this is good news. But will it be fun to drive??

Well yea! Theres all this emphasis on efficiency and range but what about a zero emissions car thats FUN to drive?? Besides the tesla roadster...*cough*twospeedftl*cough*

Hydrogen *burning* cars have been around for a while. BMW likes hydrogen burning V12s in their PR 7 series. Nothing fancy about that.

Fuel cells are very cool. Lots of research has gone into the membranes and they've made some really cool strides in the past few years. The only "problem" is that hydrogen is a poor energy storage medium at the moment with any of the current techniques.
