Wowwwww, I wonder if it sounds anything like the R10 :cripple: :O Any of you kraut lovers know if this one will actually see production?

While I think its an awesome powerplant, I fail to see how this will be an addition to the R8. Diesels are not particularly sporty and who cares what your fuel economy is in your 130k+ weekend car.
They are re-defining the diesel engine. There is no reason why diesels can't be performance motors just because they are predominantly used in 18 wheelers and "good gas mileage" sedans. I am interested to see how far they start to push diesel technology.

Most diesel engines run about a 20 to 1 compression ratio. With the right gearing it would be a great race platform, ie all the torque you need pulling out of a turn.

I fail to see how this is not sporty. It would feel like a big block Chevy, gobs of torque.

because deisels typically weigh a ton to their unleaded counterparts but other than that they make awesome power and are tough enough for gobs of boost

Anyone who argues a diesel not being sporty has never ridden in a low 12 second F250/350 or a chipped V10 TDi Toureg, they weigh 5k+ lbs and make less tourque than a stock r8 with the v12. Imagine what some injectors and a reflash would do. It seems to me like people are trying to associate audi's diesel engine to one your would find in a 1980's Peterbuilt. Hell even the duramax's are coming with gt42's stock now. I think it's awesome and i wish we had the diesel lineup that europe has, despite the price of fuel being higher than petrol.

"Sportiness" has nothing to do with power. I realize the car will be fast with 500 hp. The tq that makes you all run around like little girls is nice, but since the thing only revs to 4k rpm, the gearing will be long enough to "negate" what a 750 ft/lb gasser would feel like. Finally there's weight, which this thing will be a metric ton, then there's throttle response which is NEVER as sharp as gasser. There's also sound and while the R10 (a race car with a race engine) sounds good, it still has nothing on a nice gas engine... and finally there is price. It is going to be expensive as hell.
I'd rather have the incredible sounding, relatively light, reliable 520 hp NA 5.0L V10 from the gallardo that I can wring out to 8200 rpm any day to complete my emotional decision to have a powerful R8.

Eh...you're probably right. I mean its not like the R10s dominated the La Mans series... I know they were purpose built race cars, but that doesn't negate the fact that deisels have extreme potential as fast sports cars.
Oh yeah I found this pretty interesting as well

My only gripe about the v10...it's nearly maxed out from the factory without some extensive modification; however, with the turbo diesel there is just tons of potential. Both would make for a cool car that i'll probably never be able to afford.
and by emotional we all know you mean gay.:P
