This isn't new, but I hadn't seen much about it here.

If you don't know the first fuel cell vehicle has been released by Honda, called the FCX Clarity. it is a limited production and lease only.

Honda's solution for running it's fuel cell and/or hydrogen powered cars of the future is to have a home unit that can fill up your FCX- and also power everything else. It's called a Home Energy Station.

Honda's Home Energy Station technology is designed to facilitate the broader adoption of zero-emissions fuel cell vehicles, like the FCX Clarity, by developing a home refueling solution that makes efficient use of a home's existing natural gas supply for production of hydrogen, while providing heat and electricity to an average-size home.

The Home Energy Station IV can reduce both cost and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for the consumer. Compared to the average U.S. consumer's home with grid-supplied electricity and a gasoline-powered car, a home using Home Energy Station IV to help produce heat and electricity and also to refuel an FCX Clarity can reduce CO2 emissions by an estimated 30 percent and energy costs by an estimated 50 percent.

If I had one of those energy stations, I'd get some Mugen bolt-ons and a vtec controller for it.

Hell Yeah - Mugen sport dining room seats for me, please.

This is a very serious topic in my working life right now. I am looking to take a job with Southern Company this fall and obviously we know what SoCo. does, they build power plants. Right now there is some heavy push to get our Nuclear power plant programs off and running again. In fact there are several that are slated to begin construction soon.

At any rate I digress, but the point is that large utility knows what the trend is, and sees that rising energy costs are going to make people explor options like this.

On a more related note I noticed that Honda was using solar panel technology to harvest energy. I have been doing some research on products that are LEED (Leadership in Energy Efficient Design) certified and had run across this last year.

Solar panels have been a nuisance since the 80's. They are largely inefficient, extremely heavy, and very often lack the ability to really do much more than power a few small appliances. With the new technology that is being further refined, photovoltaic cells are becoming capable of harvesting enough power for individuals to actually sell power back to the power company in exchange for a lower rate during peak non power harvesting hours like the night and early morning.

I can tell you this, when I decide to build a home you better bet I will be putting all of this stuff in it. There are so many government programs that will basicly pay for it for you.

Yes, in fact Honda has created a new division devoted soley to Solar Panel production and R&D. Most of Honda's plants are covered in solar panels.

Hey, Whitten - my dad works for Southern Nuclear (AL Power). He's in business planning, though.

Drive down US72 from Chattanooga to Huntsville and look at Bellefonte Nuclear "Training Center" which is a 75% complete nuclear power plant owned by the TVA. There is a good chance that one or two of the new style reactors will be placed there in the next 8-10 years.

Lauren made the comment that right now its just kinda creepy because they are not running; its a radiated zombie movie just waiting to happen. :D
