When i go to play a dvd on my laptop, it does a weird skipping/lagging/clipping this like it can't buffer the movie...then if i try to watch any video or listen to and song after that, even online, it does the same buffer thing until i restart the computer. When i restart everything works fine until i try to play a dvd....what could be causing that? I figure it is either the drive itself messing up, or something corrupt in the video card. I have a Compaq R4000 if that helps anything.

possibly your video card drivers are bad... I know my sony vaio did that and the CD Drive was fine... turned out to be outdated drivers on the gfx card

It is a try drivers first then try replacing parts situation.

It could also be whatever media player you have going ape shit but I'd do the upgrade drivers first, it is cheap.

A laptop DVD burner can be had for cheap if need be: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&Description=slim%20dvd%20burner&bop=And&Order=PRICE
